A Guide for First-Time IT Employees

The piece focuses on preparing young professionals for the initial, and lingering, shock that comes with working for a series of managers who "have no clue what they want or how to get it." The guide describes how to address infuriating instances of widespread ineptitude and basic tech ignorance, but it also offers helpful tips on forging office allies and moving up the corporate ladder.
Some folks might just watch 'Office Space' for an adequate depiction of life in a cubicle, but the Yacoset piece covers invaluably specific IT circumstances, like dealing with a lack of source control or bug tracking. And, while the guide may get a little profane (who knew geeks could be so vulgar?), it is a definite must-read for anyone about to embark on an IT career (specifically those still naively full of hope, eagerness, and anticipation) . Its funny how many people dont get that though. My gf keeps thinking I need to dress up to get anywhere in work and so do my parents. They dont seem to understand that every other engineer wears shorts to work in the summer and pretty much whatever the hell they want as long as you dont have to talk to anyone from outside the company.
