Young Hipsters Leaving Social Networking Sites, Research Says

"Since when did Facebook become Mombook?" a friend asked us not too long ago, in regards to the social networking site's increasingly aging clientele. It's been anecdotally proven, time and time again, that there's no quicker way to make something uncool than for parents to catch on to it -- whether it's certain slang words or a particular style of dress.
The Guardian reports that research by media firm Ofcom suggests this adage holds true for social networking sites, too. According to the findings, just 50-percent of 15-to-24-year-olds in the United Kingdom have a profile on a social networking site in 2009, compared to 55-percent in 2008. This is the first time that number has dropped since the Facebook and MySpace boom a few years ago. Conversely, the number of 25-to-34-year-olds that use these sites has risen from 40-percent in 2008 to 46-percent now.
If the past is any indication (think music and fashion), this trend will soon hit U.S. shores. Looks like the secret's out, and now young folks will have to find a new way to communicate. Who knows? Maybe they'll start to, you know, actually meet face-to-face and talk. What a novel idea, right? [From: The Guardian]
A Facebook group supporting the International Sikh Youth Federation, a banned terrorist organization, was taken down by Canadian Police. Authorities were tipped off to the group because its page depicted a young person holding a prohibited gun, which was eventually traced back to 49-year old Bahadur Sandhur. Police seized it and two others when they investigated his home.
Banned Facebook Groups
Facebook is a great venue for humiliating oneself with ranting and raving, but, like most things, people can take things too far. Give someone a soapbox (or in this case, a Facebook group) and there are sure to be others crazy enough to follow them. Here are some examples of Facebook groups that crossed the line and were banned from the site.
Assasinate Evo Morales
Here's a good way to get your group banned -- call for the assassination of a political leader. Titled 'Global Collection to Hire a Sharpshooter to Liquidate Evo Morales' was taken down by Facebook since it bans threatening violence. No surprises here.

Dead Babies Group
Facebook took down a group called 'Dead Babies Make Me Laugh' after the UK Sun was flooded with outraged calls and emails. A running joke on campuses, the group included fake anecdotes about killing babies, but mothers weren't laughing even though the group was created and classified as being "just for fun."
I Need Sex Group
Laura Michaels of Bristol, England, created a Facebook group called 'I Need Sex.' According to the UK Sun, the group had more than 100 members after being up for only one hour. Michaels claims to have ended up sleeping with 50 of the group's members -- literally half of the group. Facebook opposes this type of personals-ad use, so the group was taken down.
KKK group
Facebook recently shut down a group called the 'Isle of Man KKK.' The group called for the elimination of newcomers from the UK island and featured a picture of a hooded Ku Klux Klan member. Thankfully, Facebook's terms of service prohibits content that is hateful or threatening.

But it is true. My 17-yr-old daughter was surprised when her 51-yr-old mother got on facebook. But now her 72-yr-old granny is on FB, too. Definitely uncool, so she uses it less. But we don't care because it's easy to catch up with friends from decades ago. The young will ride the wave of new technology just to be on the cutting edge with their friends. Older folks just wait to see what works best, then join in.

If that elderly couple in the picture are 50 years old than I think you need to have a reality check! I am 50 and that couple looks old enough to be my parents! The girl in the background looks like she could be their granddaughter...and who cares anyways who's on FB, MS, Twitter, etc??? All are great ways to keep in touch with friends, family, etc...aren't people over 25 allowed to do that? People over 30? 40? 50? 60? Why do the very young think everything "BELONGS" to them? So ridiculous!!!

LOL, I'm in the first class that had facebook, back when it was college only. Give me like two years and I will fall into that same "old" age bracket. I will admit, seeing my dad's and grandma's facebook pages is a bit unsettling, but my dad uses it for business networking and my grandma uses it to keep in touch with her huge family. I am even MORE wierded out to see my middle school brother with a facebook. When did this become something for little kids? When did little kids become teenagers?
I think facebook should have stayed college only and instead made a second facebook for post college people. That way you could graduate and transfer your profile seamlessly but college kids wouldn't have to worry about employers peeking and it wouldn't become 'uncool'.

I have very selfish reasons for avoiding facebook: trying to hide my own loser factor. Life hasn't turned out as planned, why depress the whole world tales of losing dead end jobs and failed relationships. It's easier to be happy for those who are doing well if the details of exactly how well are unknown to me. No reason to broadcast the trivial details of sorting out the wreckage of these past 10 years.

I love my Facebook! It is much more my speed than MySpace. I'm 41 and find it is just so much better...I have a page on both but can't remember the last time I even thought about the MySpace page. More and more of my friends and co-workers are going to FB as well...as far as Twitter...never even been the the website and not a single person I know is on it... FACEBOOK LOVE!!!!!!! LOL

Those folks could be in there late 60's to mid 70's. Some older folks age like that. I turned 69 this past June and No One ever believes me. They think 45 to 50. I don't look anything like them.

I'm on Facebook and love it! I'm 50 years old and look nothing like the couple in the picture! (They look to be in their 70's, at least. But that is okay too. My mom is on Facebook too, and she's 71.) Just about everyone I know who is on Facebook is over 40 though I do know some teenagers, and those in their 20's and 30's on it. Facebook is fun because you can play games, take silly "quizzes", etc. Besides talking to your friends. There's a lot to do on there!
