Mother of Autistic U.K. Hacker Calls on Obama for Help
Forty-three-year-old Londoner Gary McKinnon is facing extradition to the U.S. (as well as up to 60 years in a U.S. prison) if convicted of hacking into government computers, reports the BBC. He also has Asperger's syndrome, a type of autism disorder. After numerous failed attempts to have her son tried in the U.K., McKinnon's mother, Janis Sharp (pictured) is pleading directly to President Obama for help, having sent him a letter signed by 40 Members of British Parliament asking him to "bring this shameful episode to an end." Speaking outside the High Court last week, she added, "I'm just praying, please hear us, Obama, because I know you would do the right thing."McKinnon claims he was simply looking for suppressed UFO-related documents, and that the attacks were in no way malicious. Still, laws were broken, and two judges found that extradition was the proper response, but also admitted that extradition and prison in the U.S. for the handicapped McKinnon might be "very difficult indeed." With the U.S.-U.K. extradition treaty recently failing to get a revision, it's unknown exactly what Obama's choices are in the matter. But Sharp is hopeful. Outside the High Court, she told reporters, "Obama wouldn't have this. He doesn't want the first guy extradited for computer misuse to be a guy with Asperger's, a UFO guy." [From: BBC News]

As a mother of two Aspergers Syndrome children I know some of what this parent might be going through. This does not however take away what the adult child has done. Prision might not be the place for him as he would not get the help he really needs but he needs to understand right from wrong. He is not an stupid in fact he is very very intelliegnt, he just has a lot of trouble getting what he knows down on paper. He should be very articulate, he should be able to understand more than some people believe he knows now. My children were brought up to respect the law and all that it stands for. Anyone who thinks that having Aspergers Syndrome is a reason for not punishing a wrong is not thinking very smart. President Obama should not get involved with this execpt to make sure that the adult does not go to prision and get the help he should have gotten as a teenager, if that had happened this would all have been avoided. No one is exempt from the law ever however it depends on their level of understanding of the crime they have committed to see where they should spend their time. mom of two AS children!!!

No problem, Obama feels for your pain. Liberals want dog and phoney shows like this. It is good for softening the votes hearts and heads. Look if the kid did the crime he needs to be punshed. maybe mom need a little punishment also, she has to wait for Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton to get together to decide. Seriously, if the kid can use a computer someone needs to be there to help him understand right from wrong. That should be the person to be punished.

Please learn about Autism before you make stupid comments. I have an Autistic son and guess what? They DO NOT discern right from wrong in many cases. That is Autism. The brain does not make the connection from thought to action. Not much different from your brain at the moment.
addy692002Aug 4th 2009 10:34AM
most autistic people actually *don't* know right from wrong and it's not because someone hasn't tried to teach them, it's because their mind just does not work the same as a "healthy, normal" brain. A lot of those synapses that people call "judgement" just don't work for them... might want to research it a little before trying to call someone out with obviously no idea what you're saying...

Welcome to the dispair African Americans have felt! Thankfully PRESIDENT Obama is not narrow minded and prejudiced as you are!
Not a white guyAug 4th 2009 10:42AM
I like how the majority of you dipsh*ts that like to throw this 'Obama is for the blacks' crap seem to conveniently forget that he is half white. Turn off your computer please.

I have worked with these kinds of people for 27 years. I say, what was he doing by himself, why wasn't he being watched. These kinds of people need assisted in living. They can not be trusted to live on their own.

Invite him to the White Haus for a beer...no problem!!
Murray SilverAug 4th 2009 10:45AM
nah, you're all wrong: what'll happen here is that the guy will be extradited, tried and convicted, then strike a deal to work for the government's anti-hacking operation, write a book and sell the movie rights for $2 million to John Travolta.

Many very skilled hackers have Aspergers. The very traits actually lend themselves to hacking. For years, there has been speculation as to whether Bill Gates actually has Aspergers, for example. So I don't see the point here. Aspergers are often very capable of hacking, they are capable of lying and deception, they are capable of knowing what they are doing is right or wrong.

I don't think we should bring this man here to the United States. Remember he is disabled and we will be incurring millions of dollars just keeping him in prison - and with our extra regal prisons and all their perquisites - this man will be living like a king at our expense.
Let him stay in the UK with his Mom. These brilliant autistics will be hacking into a lot of computers. May be a remedy would be to restrain the use of his computer. give him the computer but cut of his ability to hack.
danielAug 4th 2009 10:47AM
What needs to happen is the government should punish him, but not by jail time. If he was smart enough to get hack into the computers, then he should be able to provide a way to prevent other hackers that are worse than him from doing the same thing. In this respect by hacking the computers he actually is doing the government a favor.
jroycrsAug 4th 2009 10:48AM
The man should not be brought to the USA. It will remain too expensive to keep him here in our royal prisons on our tax dollars.

Whatever happened to compassion. He made a mistake. Let him do community service in his own country

If the prosecuters do their job and see what was behind this act, they would just drop the case. Why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring this guy to the US and have a lengthy trial. This is another example of power crazy attorneys spending our fedral tax dollars on "BS". They know exactly what this guy did and what his intent was, so we don't need to make an example of him. It would be different if he was a "real" criminal.

I second that motion, people need to be held accountable for there actions whether they are crazy or not.
