'Teen Texting Tendonitis' the Latest Health Epidemic
Teens text way too much. We've gotten so used to outrageous stories here at Switched HQ that we were dismissive when we heard about 13-year-old Bailey Baker from Dallas, TX and her 8,000 monthly text messages -- after all, we've seen a different young girl send 41,000 messages in a month, and even one who claimed to send 300,000. So, 8,000? That's nothing.
That is until we learned that Bailey is suffering from what some have dubbed Teen Texting Tendonitis (or TTT), a fancy, unnecessary name for sore thumbs. As we've previously reported, your thumbs are not designed for tapping out messages on tiny keyboards. So it should come as no surprise that Bailey found herself suffering from back, neck, elbow, and thumb pain, as well as occasional numbness in her opposable fifth digit.
So now parents have one more reason to freak out about their child's texting habit: the medical bills. [From: CNN, via Examiner.com]
Teen Texting Craziness
Syracuse University professor Laurence Thomas made news last year for walking out of the classroom whenever his students disobeyed his "no texting in class" rule. Wouldn't the kind of student who would text in class be happy to have class canceled?
In January, 13-year-old Californian Reina Hardesty sent 14,528 text messages from her cell phone. Fortunately for her daddy, he had her on an unlimited text plan.
Two high school cheerleaders in Seattle were suspended from school in December when school officials found out that they had taken nude pictures of themselves on their cell phones and, mistakenly or not, wound up with them circulating through the football locker room. The girls' parents have filed suit against the school. You'd think they would just let the embarassment die quietly.
In December, while on a class trip (according to an Internet rumor anyway), the above message appeared on 18-year-old Elizabeth Frisinger's phone after mistakenly texting her dad, back home in Cleveland, that she'd just lost her virginity. Whoops!
Outdoing Reina Hardesty, 15-year-old Ohioan Paige Hornev averages 15,000 text messages a month. That comes out to the impressive, or pitiful, average of 500 text messages a day.
Thinking about Emily Jenning's texting abilities just makes our thumbs hurt. The Vancouver, British Columbia teen pumped out an absurd 41,600 text messages in the course of a single month -- we did some quick calculations and that works out to about one text every minute.

"Teen Texting Tendonitis... a fancy name for sore thumbs." Wow, way to name an illness after teens. "Teens text way too much." Not all teens text a lot! I know A LOT of adults who text non-stop. Most of their thumbs are soar too. Instead of "Teen Texting Tendonitis" why not call it "Texting Tendonitis". Adults were teens once too you know!!!

By the states record for stupidity I assume you are referring to the contributions made by such Texans as Walter Cronkite, or Dan Rather. You could also be refereing to the Stupidity of Phill Gramm or even Lyndon Baines Johnson. Then there is the stupidity of all of those at the Alamo who stood strong to prevent themselves, and your precious home state(wherever that is) from becoming part of Mexico. Or perhaps it was the stupidity of the likes of Chester William Nimitz, and Howard Hughes. Then there is always the Stupidity of the musician crowd Like Buddy Holly, Jack Johnson, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Roy Orbison, or Bob wills. Maybe even the idiotic actions of Roger Staubach, Don Meredith, or Nolan Ryan. Or it may just be the Stupidity of supplying the rest of you cotton, beef, and oil. Possibly my favorite is the stupidity of allowing a bunch of Yankees to move in and start drilling for our natural gas to provide power to the rest of the country. KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL.....PUT A YANKEE ON A BUS!!!!

are we supposed to feel bad for her or any person (teens) that "develop" this issue? How about the parent taking the damn phone away instead of just giggling about 'uncovering a problem'... and not to mention that the entire time they are waiting for the doctor, the girl has the damn phone in her hands... WAKE UP LADY!!!! And let me guess, there will soon be law suits against phone companies for "causing injuries"... People have been dumbing down for a long time and now texting has begun to encourage that. We wonder why kids today LACK communication skills and can't articulate anything.

i only text when i'm at home and am totally bored. my sister texts like all the time and it gets really annoying. like we'll go out for a family dinner and she'll pull her phone out and be texting in the restaurant. or if i have a friend over and then they are pulling their phone out every couple minutes texting people, how rude is that? it's like, if you'd rather sit there and talk to somebody else instead of hanging out with me then just leave. i love texting because i hate to call people, but some people just take it alittle far.

She has a serious problem that, from where I'm standing, looks like an addiction. I think her parents should monitor her texting instead of publicizing her problem.

Yesterday, I almost killed a boy on a bike, TEXTING,
I was more upset than he was.. Maybe they should be getting a $50.00 ticket when the cops see them, and they must see them!!!!
Get with it, parents . Well, they still use cell phones driving.
I could stand on a corner and get 50 tickets an hour, if they enforced it.
That would raise a lot of money for our ailing towns economy!!!!!!

Being a teen myself, this bothers me. ._.
I mean, did they SERIOUSLY have to give it a frickin' name?!
I used to text often, and my thumbs never hurt.
Adults don't exactly understand us....
And unless there's actual teens typing this out, I don't buy any of this shit.

patient: It really hurts when I punch myself in the face
doctor: stop punching yourself in the f-ing face
what a retarded story, this is the problem with 24/7 news

I think that each generation has their thing. Decades ago kids were eating goldfish. I think this is just a cultural thing that kids can do in private. No one can hear what they are saying on their cell phone. would I ever text? no. would I allow my kid to text, I would work hard to limit it Regardless of each generations oddities, many grow up to be responsible good citizens. As for the first post about Texans, well thats just plain mean. Its folks like that who do not grow up to be responsible good citizens. Unless they can find a way to heal that meanness. That is a much bigger health concern than tendonitis.

do we really need a news article and video segment on cnn to tell us that texting can cause thumb problems? i think its pretty insulting to my intelligence that they think we dont already know this ...

What parent in their right mind would bring there child to the ER or Dr because they had sore thumbs. Are you serious? You have got to be kidding. And they are gonna name a syndrome after this? We are weak and pathetic beings. If I were the Dr. I would send them out of my ER quick as rain. And any parent who allows there child to send 40,000 text messages in a month and be billed for it....this is why our youth are so weak and pathetic. Are we gonna start texting the Russians in 20 years, or how about the Iraqi's...let's text them that we are gonna declare war on them. what a friggin joke these people are. I am startint to think twice about AOL as my ISP, I mean this should be an entertainlment story not front page news. I got a blister playing golf the other day, I knew I should have went to ER.....maybe my insurance would pay for my time off....
