Apple Asked Microsoft to End 'Laptop Hunter' Ads?

Speaking at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference, Turner claimed that Apple's legal team had contacted him, stating "you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." Ars technica writes that Turner wondered at first if the call was a joke, but went on to say it, "was the greatest single phone call in...history that I've ever taken in business."
Apple may have cut its prices recently, but the so-called "Apple tax" is still very much a reality. Entry to the cult of Apple will run you $999 for a MacBook. A comparably equipped Dell laptop will set you back $300 less.
If true, the story highlights how effective Microsoft's latest marketing campaign has been. After a few years of Madison Avenue dominance, we're actually kind of enjoying seeing Apple on the defensive. [From: Ars Technica, Via: Engadget]

I've used both Mac's and PC's, I don't get all the hype about Mac's, even if they were the same price, I still wouldn't buy the Mac, I also don't get the rep that PC's have about problems, the only thing that Apple is better at is marketing

I love my Mac and will never buy another PC. The MAC is totally reliable, has all necessary security/anti virus software needed and soooo easy to use. Plus, if you need to call for tech support you're speaking to someone from THIS country! That alone is worth all the $$ in the world!!

Somehow this has to be Bush's fault.

Apple does not need to lower their prices, every single thing they sell is completely worth it! I had for several years a PC actually several PC's because they usually end up being "old" in a period of months or one year, or they were not working great after that time. So one day I decide to get Mac Book and believe me is the best computer ever! its so easy to manage, the programs are great and very helpful, and I have never had any problem with it. I already have 3+ years with my Mac book and I also have my apple desk top. I will never go back to PC!
So... It is really hard to believe that the "Call" they are describing ever had place.
I am a Apple fan and I can only say everything I had bought from them works great, has great value and is the best!

Let me say this... I will pay ANY amount of money for a MAC in the future because they LAST. I have been through 2 Dell and 1 HP computers in the last 6 years and this Dell (paid $1600 for it in 2007) is about to go as well. The "U" on he keyboard popped off, the screen is coming apart, the adapter that came with it has been replaced by Dell and the new one is no longer recognized to charge it. On top of that, I can no longer install any printer software because one of the updates I was forced to take deleted a key that is required. I CONSTANTLY have performance issues due to virus scan running or getting adware attacking me. In a 3 hour period, I had been infected with 44 spyware/adware programs that both the Dell firewall, the McAfee anti-virus software, and the Windows Defender ddn't catch. My husband has had 1 Mac Probook for the last 8 years and NEVER has a problem and he has more programs than I do, including Microsoft Bootcamp (lets your run Windows on a Mac), Excel, Word, etc. As far as I am concerned, i will pay for the Mac any day because they LAST.

Really, 44 viruses/adwqare/spyware in such a short time. What were you doing? Trying to download pirated software/music/porn?
Funny thing is, that in the real world MACs are just NOT IMPORTANT enough to bother writing viruses for! They are an insignificant portion of the computing population. When/if that changes, watchout MAC! You'll have one hell of a rude awakening and be crawling back to MS OS and virus protection to save you!

The only problems I've had was when I bought my friends Intel pc and it crashed and BURNED. The AMD pc's that I 've had have had no problems at all except for a viruse that I picked up and had to completly restore the machine. AMD is just a great version of pc's that are realy good.

Both Mac and PC work fine if you know how to use them.
Mac's cost more

We have PC's at the office and Macs at home. I spend more time on a PC. I find Macs an enjoyable experience whereas PCs are frustrating. We would definately use Macs at the office except that we use some industry software that is only made for PCs. I love my Mac.

Honestly, people really do not know how shop smart at all, especially when it comes to spending money on such forms of technology. I have spent about 17 years of my life with a PC, and about 3 with a Mac. When it comes down to it, Macs are better than PCs. When it comes to buying a computer, of course buying the cheaper product is often the consumer savy thing to do. However, this is not at all the case when it comes to buying a computer. When you buy a computer, its like make an investment in something. Yeah it costs more, however, it will last a lot longer than a PC will, and as a 3rd year college student on my third year with my Macbook and my families 4th year with our iMac, we have not had a problem with either one yet. I know most people with PCs that have had either to send it in to be fixed or by a completely new laptop in less than 3 years. And honestly, how can you say that the Mac OSX is a hassle to learn how to use, in less than a year, my mother, who is the biggest technophobe, learned how to us the Mac operating system. When I see these commercials, I understand why the head of Apple is really mad with these advertisements. Its because these advertisements really only show that Microsoft is only better when it comes to the price, and are not doing much else. At least when it comes to the "I am a Mac" commercials, they explain why their product is better in a consumer savy way.

I switched in 2002 from a PC to a Mac and the only way I would own a PC again is if Apple went out of business. I have 2 iMacs and an iBook any problems I have ever encountered were with peripheral hardware. In the late 80's I took college classes on computer software applications, in the mid 90's a computer repair course so I do know a bit about them and personally feel that you get what you pay for and the extra $ is well worth it in time and reliability. I run a small business and would be in serious trouble if I had to have my computers down for repair and virus problems. Nothing is perfect but peace of mind is something I treasure.

Like mamma always said you get what you pay for!!! True a Mac is a few hundred dollars more up front...BUT...They last much longer and are MUCH less prone to the PC pains in the azz...The amount of time i've spent being frustrated while my Dell updates/crashes/locks/up/runs slow/etc/etc/etc/ are worth WAY more than the few hundred dollars to get a MAC!!!!!!

Apple started the whole fiasco by attacking Microsoft's operating system. (If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.) I've had 3 PCs over the past 14 years and upgraded only because I needed larger hard drives & memory. Those machines are still running. They are not inferior to a Mac. If Apple relied solely on its computer sales, I don't think they'd still be in business. iPods pulled their failing, flailing chestnuts out of the fire. Apple has always been overpriced and if all we had to choose from was Macs, a lot of us out there wouldn't have computers. In the begining they were smart when they put their computers into schools and people got used to them subliminally and bought Macs simply because they were familiar. They didn't have that many problems with viruses because hackers didn't waste their time creating viruses for a limited number of machines. That has changed and Apple is a lot slower in making "fixes" for these viruses than Microsoft. Owning a Mac is like owning a Volvo, there is a certain snob appeal attached to it. (I've also owned Volvos BEFORE they became the yuppie-puppie vehicle of choice. Incidently, Volvo upped their prices simply because they knew that people operate on the premise that if it is more expensive, it must be better. They did this to pull the market away from Mercedes.) Think about it before you pony up the big bucks for a Mac.

I have been fortunate to be able to use both PC's and Mac's for many years now and just a little FYI you can buy programs for either that could be infected with a virus without knowing. Those individuals who write these programs sometimes copy parts of other programs to integrate into theirs so they don't have to do the work, kind of cheating but makes the work go faster, and if there is a virus there or glitch when you install you got it unknowingly. And most of the time the reasons Mac's don't have many problems is because there aren't many programs compatible with them in the first place. My husbands Uncle swears by Mac's at his home but when he travels for business he leaves it and uses his sons Gateway Laptop for ease of use and compatibility with others, he said he was tired of being left behind in meetings trying to get his Mac to accept the Google Doc's they were using.

It's been a constant battle between Jobs and Gates from the get-go. Ever since Gates pirated from Jobs. Every version of windows is a copy of Mac OS.

I love my iPhone, BUT..I have been useing the same HP for nearly six years in my studio 9Im a commercial photographer) My parents, have had three Macs die on them in this same period of time. A school system in Virginia who gives out laptops to the students for the school year - just switched from Mac to PC because of the many Mac's maintenance issues and problems. I think I'll just stick with what works. (at a much less cost)
POLLYJul 21st 2009 8:10PM
MAC ALL THE WAY! I've been a PC user for YEARS and I'll tell you this-it's well, well worth the difference in price because you're buying a FAR superior piece of equipment. You're better off saving for a Mac than dumping money to fix a PC-over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
sarahJul 20th 2009 10:30AM
the big but here being that PCs SUCK, and who wants to pay $300 for a machine that will fail and fail again. I'd rather pay extra for something i can count on!
