Our familiar cell phones, boring billboards, even the predictably uncomfortable airline seats in coach -- it appears that this week, normal, everyday things we've taken for granted are changing, or disguising something sinister. Especially in New York, where
cell phones are being used to hide razor blades or shanks. Over in New Zealand, morning commuters are getting a shock when their way to work is
interrupted by a bleeding, crying safe-driving ad. And we've all grown accustomed to the hassle of flying, but
Ryanair is taking it too far, trying to pack planes with standing customers. Yes, we live in a fast-paced world, but some mundane things should stay as they are, right? Other things that add to our confusion this week:
- Happy Bastille Day! Before we storm the castle and enact our own peasant revolution, check out the five weapons that changed the world.
- We already mentioned that airlines treat you poorly, but if something terrible happens, say, to your guitar, don't get mad, get musical, and write a song about your horrible experience and take it to the Web.
- Doomsayers, get nervous. The ominously named EATR (Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot) may run on steam and is self-powered, but it also consumes biological refuse, like apple cores. Hard to imagine humans aren't next...
- Microsoft has released a warning to Internet Explorer users who run XP or Windows 2003, saying that hackers are exploiting a hole in the program that is activated merely by visiting a site. In the meantime, disable Active X.
- 3-D printing is all the rage, whether you are Jay Leno or a young designer looking for a cheap way to make a prototype. Check out up-and-coming product firm Design Glut take the Switched challenge.
- Next to the King of Pop's death and the inauguration of Pres. Obama, Michael Jackson's memorial service had the third highest amount of Internet streaming traffic of all time. For a moment, we were all connected in harmony... and then the incessant tweeting and updating became too much.
