Morning Xtra: Deadly Unmanned Drones, MJ Memorial 'Not Obama Big'
by Leila Brillson on July 8, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
- You may have heard somewhere that the King of Pop died. You might also have heard that his funeral, while a massively watched event, didn't have the virtual attendance of Obama's inauguration, or the news of MJ's death, itself. So it's the third largest Web event of the year, and of all time -- the Prez's swearing in being number one. [From: AllThingsDigital]
- In an effort to snuff out Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud (allegedly responsible for the assassination of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto), American unmanned drones killed at least a dozen suspected militants in their third attack this week. [From: Wired]
- Barry Diller, the online-trepreneur who owns Match.com, just shelled out $80 million for People Media's dating sites, including 'BlackPeopleMeet' and 'SeniorPeopleMeet.' IAC, Diller's company, seems to be in the (buying) mood. [From: BusinessInsider]
- Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens announced that his plan to wean the U.S. off of foreign oil by creating the world's largest wind farm has hit a wall. Poor Pickens. At least he has the best oil baron name around. [From: CNN.com]
- According to FutureSource Consulting, home broadband connections will number 500 million by 2010. As far as speed goes, Japan and South Korea head the pack with a national average of 30 Megabits per second, and the US trails at 2.7Mbps. Time to put the dial-up away, Americans.

I received this from my old friend, I was aware of some of this but did not know the President and Congress honored Michael Jackson.
Ed McMahon died this week. He was a great entertainer, but prior to his stage accomplishments he was a distinguished Marine Corps fighter pilot in WWII earning six Air Medals during action in WWII and later Korea also attaining the rank of Colonel. He was discharged in 1966 from the Marine Corp Reserve and was later promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the CA Air National Guard.
Farrah Fawcett died this week after a long career in Hollywood as an actress. After she was diagnosed with cancer, she became an activist for cancer treatment and devoted her last remaining years encouraging people to seek treatment. She documented her plight on film and used it to encourage others to stay positive and upbeat despite their diagnosis and suffering.
Michael Jackson died this week. He was perhaps one of the greatest singers of modern time. He will also be remembered for his eccentric lifestyle that included sleeping with a chimpanzee, living in a carnival-like atmosphere at Neverland, his fascination with Peter Pan, and his numerous masks and costumes. He also admitted to finding pleasure sleeping with young boys and paying out millions of dollars in settlements to the families of these boys despite being acquitted by a court on one allegation of sexual molestation.
QUESTION - Which of the above did the House of Representatives declare a moment of silence for today? (Hint - It wasn't the first two.)
QUESTION - Which of the above's family received a personal note of condolence from President Obama?
(Hint - It wasn't the first two.)

What a great entertainer, MJ; nutcase, but great.
