TV Host Mobilizes Twitter Army Over $11K Phone Bill

After vacationing in Canada, 'Mythbusters' host Adam Savage (donttrythis on Twitter) learned, and tweeted: "AT&T is attempting to charge me 11k for a few hours of Web surfing in Canada. Pls RT (retweet)!" And re-tweet (spread the word) they did. Savage contended that while abroad he only browsed the Web on his laptop for a few hours and did not download any files. So, to fight the bill, he and his 60,000 followers sounded an angry cacophony of critical tweets. AT&T heard (or read) the complaints and relented, agreeing to absolve Savage of the charges.
Savage said he does believe that his celebrity status and large following may have given him an advantage over average consumers, but he also "absolutely" believes that Twitter is an "important communication tool," according to Canada.com. Despite the attention the site constantly receives as being a haven for celebrities, some folks (AT&T being one) are beginning to recognize the power and influence an army of angry followers, armed with Twitter, can wield. Comedians on Twitter
Twitter has a 140-character limit on its tweets, which makes it a perfect forum for comedians to distribute jokes, one-liners, and pithy commentary to their fans and anyone who wants a laugh. Here are five funny folks who are making the most of the ridiculously popular microblogging service.

Oh my goodness! he may have been charged for roaming data. If he did not have an international data plan, then yes, he would have been charged for an extra large amount of data. Even not downloading files, you are still surfing the Web and accessing data!! I work for AT&T, I should know this stuff!!
vreblessedJun 30th 2009 1:04AM
AT&T is in the business to make a large profit. I would have cancelled my
account if they did not reverse those ridiculous charges. 11 Grand for
a few hours surfing the web.
I think not.

My only quesiton is, since when is Canada "abroad"?
DesireeJul 1st 2009 12:54AM
That is so true!!! I thought abroad was supposed to be across waters, not next door????
AnthonyJun 29th 2009 8:57PM
READ YOUR CONTRACT!!!! Instead of crying about your bill you should have strudy Geography. Canada is not part of the US. As a former Manager for at&t mobility it's ignorant people like you that made me leave. Whoever said you need a cell phone whereever you go. You use the time, YOU pay for the time. Again, ignorant people like you should not use cell phones. Maybe you can get one of your sponsors to pay for your bill not at&t.

Just another reason the breakup of att was a boneheaded move and please - stop about reading the fine print. Two countries as close as the us and canada should NOT have roaming charges that ridiculous, with or without an international plan!.
nena454Jun 29th 2009 9:35PM
amen to that .. I never knew that canada was part of the usa .he should be responsible for those charges. ATT should remove those credits and bill him for it.....!

I don't care if he was in China... 11K is outrageous! Where ever he it is doesnt cost AT&T any more or less!
ronaldmckJun 29th 2009 9:15PM
A lady in an unfortuate situation, had to call me collect several years ago, and I accepted. ATT billed me $18.00 which I paid. That hurt my feeling so ATT will never see another penny from me or anyone else I can influence. They will ride anyone's back if they got a chance. Ron Mck

I agree with Anthony (above). Why not read the contract like everyone else must do instead of using one's celebrity status to bilk AT&T of what were legitimate charges if he neglected to get an international plan.
As to Titter - I fully subscribe to its designation as "a haven for narcissistic voyeurs"
LaCasse1Jun 29th 2009 10:12PM
Farmer,
It's just a saying, it does not disolves you from that fact that you are responsible for legit charges for not getting an international plan to cover international data charges, lord get an education already please.
jenks318Jun 30th 2009 5:40AM
You should be careful when you tell someone to get an education. It is absolves, not disolves. A side point, you spelled dissolves incorrectly. I hope an education is in your future.

ginhoytJun 29th 2009 10:55PM
If you use the service, you must pay!! How is that NOT CLEAR? If I owned a business I would want employees like Anthony. Everyone needs to play by the rules....EVERYONE. Obviously he understands that!!!
amyJun 29th 2009 10:47PM
I have no sympathy for anyone who isn't smart enough to realize that CANADA is not part of the USA. Naturally you will get roaming charges unless you have some kind of international plan. FYI people, Mexico isn't part of the USA either. Time to brush up on your geography. Just because you share a continent doesn't mean you share a country. Duh.
siharmonJun 29th 2009 11:53PM
The international pricing is designed to maximize their income. However, Mexico has a cute scam going. I have business in Mexico south of Bisbee, AZ, but this also happens in Texas, too. You are IN the US, driving on a US highway, near the border. Mexican telcos have their cell towers right on the border. Naturally, they are sending out Look At Me messages to your phone, and your phone tells those Mexican towers that it is indeed in contact with them. When you get your bill, there can be a couple hundred dollars on it for international calls, not because you actually talked to anyone, but because you are simply accessing a tower in Mexico. ATT was kind enough to remove them from my bill, but you do need to watch the bills when you get back from border regions. I don't know if this happens along the Canadian border or not.

It cracks me up when some American celeb goes to a foreign country and dimwittedly tried to play by the same rules as they do back at home. Hello!?! Did you have a clue you weren't in Kansas anymore Dorothy when they asked you for your passport at immigration? Apparently Mr. Savage isn't near as smart as the character he plays on Mythbusters.
