Drunk Driving Safer than Driving and Texting, Study Suggests

What's that you say, Car And Driver? You've got a video where you put real people behind the wheel of real vehicles, and make them read and fire off messages? Then, you get them them hammered to find out if DWT (driving while texting) is actually as bad as driving while intoxicated. Okay, we cave...
Tell us more.
The car enthusiast magazine ran tests at two different speeds, 35 miles per hour and 75 mph, with two different subjects, a 22-year-old intern and the 37-year-old editor-in-chief. Then, the test measured the amount of time it took subjects to stop when prompted by a set of LEDs (mounted on the windshield). This was meant to simulate break lights on a car ahead of the subjects. Using that as a baseline, Car And Driver measured how much longer it took the intern and the editor to stop when reading a text, writing a text, and drunk.
The intern took an extra seven feet to stop at 35 mph, and 15 extra feet at 75 mph while intoxicated. But those numbers doubled when texting -- an extra 31 feet were needed while texting at 75 mph. Wow.
The older editor-in-chief did even worse. He took an extra 319 feet to stop while texting at 75 Mph, but only 17 more while three sheets to the wind. We encourage our readers to check out the video by following the read link (below). [From: Car And Driver, Via: CNET]

Boy that sure sounds like a highly scientific study. BTW, they shouldn't title this article "Drunk Driving Safer than Driving and Texting" - "safer" isn't really an appropriate adjective for "drunk driving". "Driving and Texting More Dangerous Than Drunk Driving" would have made more sense.

In essence, though, you're still saying the same thing, Joe.

While literally the two may mean the same thing, they imply different things
"Drunk Driving Safer than Driving and Texting" implies that both are safe, but that one is safer than the other.
"Driving and Texting More Dangerous than Drunk Driving" implies that Drunk Driving is dangerous, but Driving and Texting is more dangerous.

Drunk Driving safer????????????????????????????. Your absolutely NUTs.
Although Texting is extremely dangerous to say the least, speeding, general all round inattentiveness.

+1...anything that will take your attention from the road is dangerous driving.
Drunk Driving is ridiculous and is very well prevented if a person values their life and of other lifes.
Phone tech has just gotten too much i fear...the ability to do anything and check anything at all times has just made people overall less attentive to the real world

Don't forget to look at those who use cell phone while driving. They are equally bad, period.
lookatthepiggyJun 29th 2009 10:11PM
The big difference is that you can stop texting, you can't just stop being drunk.
MikeeJul 9th 2009 11:32AM
Nope. Based on the number of people I see and know that text while driving, they are unable to stop.
And to all the morons whining about the title, are you seriously stupid enough to think that anyone is implying that drunk driving is safe? If you idiots spent half as much energy doing something productive as you do crying about semantics, you'd cure cancer and AIDS in less than 24 hours.
LoganMay 4th 2010 1:26PM
They're both safe....if you have lots of practice.

Seriously, is this supposed to count as a study? As far as i know valid studies takes more than two participants, they have to, otherwise they are not relevant. I am not contesting the results, i am just saying that it would have added more value to the results. It is very clear to me that both drunk driving and texting while driving are some of the most dangerous habits people can have, but i can't tell which one is worst.
