Tips to Fight Spam on Your Computer and Cell Phone 4

3) Use security software to block the bad stuff
This one is important, even if you don't have a raging spam problem. Other than regularly backing up your files (something every computer user should do), you should always install security software on your computer. These apps protect you not only from spam, but also from viruses and other nasty computer intruders. (Not all packages include spam protection, so be sure to check out their feature lists.) Many free and pay options exist, but just make sure to keep your software up-to-date. Some popular services that offer frequent updates are McAfee Internet Security 2009 ($49) and Norton 360 ($80). If you're using the AOL Client and are an AOL member, you can get free protection from McAfee (discounts are available for non-members).

you can get absolutely FREE anti virus protection by going to www.download.com and look for AVG or whatever the most popular anti virus software. I have used all of them. Don't forget to remove all virus programs BEFORE you attempt to install another.

Two oversights and errors in this article: (1) McAfee anti-virus software is NOT free for AOL members--I just checked, and Free AOL members have to pay a fee for it; (2) no Mac OS version of the McAfee software is offered (does this say something about the need for Mac anti-virus protection?).

AVG is perfect, and it's FREE. I never have problems with any of the privacy issues and too much junk mail. Free works for me. I HATED Norton, and also McAfee... take over the computer, and you have a very dfficult time getting rid of them, PLUS they are NOT FREE

im amazed that they still run these marketing ads disguised informational reading material. folks i don't need to tell you, all the software mentioned in this article are bloat ware that waste your CPU cycles and don't help you, and on top of that, cost you bucks! I wonder how much the writer got paid for putting this on here. you have to wonder how good is software that you have to install more software just to uninstall them!. better yet, get yourself the best free antivirus software out there.....ubuntu linux. Out of the box its safer than windows will ever be. 5 years running a linux box and i have yet to be infected with anything. the only thing i use an antivirus scanner for is to make sure im not sending you windows users a virus when im emailing. and no, no one is paying me to advertise here. but hey, if you want to stick with an o/s that will never be any better than it is, because it doesnt have to be, then enjoy your viruses. chao!
