15-Year-Old Texting Champ Wins $50,000
Each year, LG holds its National Texting Championships in New York City, and SMS fiends gather from around the country to battle for thumb-dexterity supremacy. This year's champ, 15-year-old Kate Moore of Des Moines, Iowa, took the title, but her path to victory was not without some serious obstacles. Literally.LG, in a nod to texters' dangerous tendency to multi-task, forced contestants to run an obstacle course while sending difficult-to-type messages, and compose tongue twisters while being taunted by a giant emoticon. We can't make this stuff up.
The event climaxed in a tie-breaker, with Moore and runner up Dynda Morgan, a 14-year-old from Savannah, Georgia, furiously texting this behemoth SMS:
"Zippity Dooo Dahh Zippity Ayy...MY oh MY, what a wonderful day! Plenty of sunshine Comin' my way....Zippitty Do Dah Zippity Aay! WondeRful Feeling Wonderful day!"
Moore beat her younger competitor to the "send" button, and walked away with $50,000 for her troubles -- and a life-long excuse for not putting down her phone during dinner. [From: CNN, Via: CNET]

I get it, it's good for phone companies to get our kids addicted to texting but where do we draw the line? Kids are texting during class instead of paying attention and doing their work, they text while they drive which the statistics tell us is dangerous. If they're texting during dinner, there went the last opportunity for family communication. And then we have too many parents who just don't care. They can't control whether their kids take the phone to school against school policy, they can't tell them to not bring the phone to the dinner table. And now we have a company rewarding that behavior. What's next, rewards for underage drinking?

Our Society is nuts! ITs like a drug! These people will be killing innocent people and I warn anyone who hits me with a car driving while on the phone or texting I will sue them them until they live on the streets, they won't own anything by time I get thru with them! keep going america with your drug (Texting) it will come back to get you!

this is what our world has come to? Texting Competitions?
AliJun 18th 2009 1:14PM
My goodness people.... lighten up! You don't know a thing about this child or her parents.. You have no idea what her plans are for the money. And this does not mean she will text while driving. I have a 12 year old boy that can text like crazy, but he knows no phone at dinner, during homework time, or during class at school. I am teh PARENT. I laid down the rules and told him the consequences and he abides by the rules because I follow through with punishment. If he was in this competition and won, most of the money would have gone for his education, he would have been given some todo something fun, but the rest would have beenput to good use. And for those who call her pampered.... just because she has a phone she is pampered? I live in a small 2br/1ba house and my husband and I drive cars that are 10+ years old and my son has a cell phone... big deal, he is not pampered. If he wants something, he has to earn it through good grades, good behavior, and earning money through extra chores.... So quit making snap judgements when you don;t have a clue and be glad this girl won something.

Another brainless moron that will become the future of this country. Now aren't we proud?
JBJun 18th 2009 1:28PM
WOW!!! Now she has enough money to pay for the lawsuit for running into someone while TEXTING some useless message to someone instead of paying attention to what she SHOULD be doing while she's driving.

This is disgusting. One more reason I will not buy anything LG. Their washers and dryers SUCK as well as their customer service.
MeghanJun 18th 2009 2:08PM
This is a dumb competition. Texting fries your brain, I'm 15 and never text. Isn't it cheaper and healthier to go outside and play basketball anyways? You shouldn't be awarded money for being a texter.
sporkonaforkJun 20th 2009 5:40PM
hah what a looser, i wonder how much 1000s of $ this girls parents phone bill is to pay for the many txt shes done
InklingJun 18th 2009 2:49PM
THIS should not even be a contest. This should not be paying money to some lame person that has found nothing else better to do with their time. OOOOOhhh, I'm going to be famous for being able to text messages fast...and your NEXT accomplishment in life is???? This is retarded. Hey, I bet I have the record for giving the most "I don't give a shits in a day". Where's my 50 G?
ForTheGromJun 18th 2009 2:35PM
LOL, better competition, finally people are rewarded for an everyday skill that promotes better communication!
PCBuilder568Jun 18th 2009 4:16PM
For those of you who asked who paid the $50,000, it was LG. For those of you who said "Now we are paying" We only paid for this if we own or have bought any equipment made by LG. For those who have said "Why?" Every contest or sweepstakes is a tax write off. For every dollar they give away, they can claim as an expense of some sort on taxes. They aren't losing anything because it helps them in two ways. It draws in more consumers and the government doesn't bite them as hard when or if they didn't do something like this.

human de-evolution...makes my job even harder now. thanks NTC! @$$h01e!
Jerome SmithJun 18th 2009 11:11PM
I would of had them drive ,in traffic ,and text messaging. Then you could tell the real winner, they are going to do it anyway,
