UK Hosts First Twitter Comedy Club, One-Liners Abound

A side effect of turning into the twittering, status-updating, text-messaging generation is that we are becoming expert critics and purveyors of the comedic one-liner. Just look up Internet phenomenon Texts From Last Night to see what you can do with a little 160-character humor, or talk to the comedians at Twitter Comedy Club (@tweetcomedyclub).
An exercise in the possibilities of real-time microblogging, British funny-man Tiernan Douieb organized the first Internet comedy club, where fans of stand-up could follow the Club's '#tcgig' hashtag, or the acts themselves. Hecklers were encouraged to use the @reply function, and there was a proper lineup with nine comedians from the UK.
The laugh-fest (er, LOL-fest) took place on June 8th, and, reviewing the event on his Web site, Douieb pointed out some room for improvement. For one thing, Twitter does not allow the exclusive use of a particular hashtag. As a result, random folks who included the hashtag kept interrupting the 'sets' (a bit like in real life). Additionally problematic, a couple acts hit the tweets-per-hour limit and were booted. Fortunately, the organizers and comedians can review all their hiccups, as transcripts are online. (So viewers who missed the gig can have a laugh, too.) The advantages of Twitter comedy is that anyone, anywhere can tune into a live online gig, and, suggests Douieb, save money on drinks. Twitter is like a breath of fresh air on the Social Media scene. I have been on it for just a few weeks now and I have met several interesting people. It is a platform to network with people you would like to meet in real life.
