Facebook Launches Personal URLs (Finally)

Facebook, in what seems like a long overdue gesture, will finally roll out vanity URLs for its users this Saturday. After a semi-dramatic countdown, the social networking site will start letting members set user names, instead of random numbers, to show up in their pages' URLs.
If you're a relative newcomer to Facebook, though, you should keep your shirt on, according to the Facebook Blog. In order to protect URLs from spammers and squatters, Facebook administrators are instituting a temporary ban from registration against anybody who has created a Facebook Page since May 31st or a regular profile since 3 p.m. EST Tuesday. That ban will be lifted at an as-of-yet unspecified time. If you're a long-standing Facebooker, though, you should have no problem in signing up a minute after the stroke of midnight (Eastern time) this coming Saturday.
Facebook claims that more will be done with user names in the future, which sounds just about right; the idea of having unique URLs -- which Myspace has featured for years -- is one that Facebook should have had a long time ago. So get ready for June 13th, at 12:01 a.m. [From: Facebook Blog, via DownloadSquad]

Always Turn Off Stolen GPS Units
It was only a matter of time before some numbskull criminal stole a GPS-equipped car or phone, but we didn't expect someone to steal live GPS units. A group of crooks in Lindenhurst, NY swiped 14 functioning GPS devices from the Town of Babylon Public Works. Understandably, authorities had no trouble tracking them down.
Security Cam Catches Tattooed Thief
We're not going to pass judgement on the type of tattoo you get, but you might want to think about what it says before you start getting into crime. Aaron Evans, a 21-year-old U.K. repeat offender, was caught stealing a car's GPS unit because the nearby CCTV captured the tattoo on his neck. It revealed his birthday and name...
Laptop Auto-Uploads Photo of Thief to the Web
This guy may be the unluckiest thief ever. Several laptops disappeared from a Vancouver, BC company; fortunately, one particular laptop was loaded with software that snapped photos when opened. The images of this guy were uploaded to Flickr. As a result, the man became a mini-Internet sensation, and he turned himself in, claiming he bought the laptop from a friend, at a local police station.
Things Not to Do After Stealing a Cell Phone
Gary Walker, an Ohio resident, stole a woman's phone while she had temporarily stepped out of her car to check a street sign. He proceeded to snap a shot of himself with the hot phone's camera. Later, when the victim went online and downloaded her data to transfer it to a new phone, Gary's mug popped up. The rest, as they say, is history.
HighTube
This 25-year-old Brit cultivator of cannabis decided to post videos -- under his real name -- of his cash crop on YouTube. English police saw the clips and he was soon tracked down and arrested.
Girl Recovers Stolen Mac By Remotely Activating Its Webcam
A White Plains, New York girl was the victim of burglary; over $5,000 worth of electronics, including iPods, a flatscreen TV, and a new Macintosh computer were stolen. A few days later, a friend noticed that the burglary victim appeared to be online, but called her to make sure. Because the stolen Mac was running Back to My Mac, the victim was able to log into the computer remotely and snap a picture of the thief. Turns out the thieves were "friends" who had visited the victim's apartment several weeks earlier.
Teen Arrested After Bragging About Arson on Security Cameras
A pregnant Los Angeles teen was arrested earlier after allegedly starting seven fires near her home. 19-year-old Amanda Gessner was caught after convenience store cameras caught her chanting, "The fire company is gonna be
mad at me!" She was certainly right about that!
Would-Be Voyeur Puts Spy Cam in Restroom, Leaves Video of Himself
An upstate New York man installed a camera in a unisex bathroom. The camera was discovered soon after installation, and police found he'd left a video of himself on the camera. Police are still looking for the man.
Forklift Tricks on YouTube
If you're going to show off your sweet forklift driving skills to your buddies, it's probably best to just do it in person. 20-year-old Australian Matthew Garry Ward uploaded a video of safety-violating forklift tricks to YouTube, and was reported to authorities after a coworker passed the video along to the boss.
Laser Pointer Shenanigans
Remember those time-sucking high school pep rallies where some loser would whip out a laser pointer and temporarily blind people in the bleachers? This 15-year-old genius from California, was arrested after shining his laser beam at a police helicopter.

Oh give me a break. With everything going on in this world you are worried about a bunch of strays? Heck its China Erica. They will then eat the animals. Just because you love your Tabitha or Pokey doesn't mean they don't love MooShu Cat. Meat is meat and thats that. How would you feel if they were eating the animals for food yet just threw the fur away as waste? That would be a waste. Now go out there and worry about real things not the foods people choose to eat and the ways they utilize the waste products. Heck we praise the native americans for their use of animal bones in other applications as conservationists yet the chinese are pet killers with no soul.

Glad you explained it this way. The blurb on facebook makes it sound like people who want to find you will have to type your username in the search box, which is NOT easier than your own name.
But still...myspace is lame. FB is already getting sad what with trying to be twitter. Hopefully this will work.

The number of changes Facebook has gone through over the past 4 or so years is ridiculous. It started as a social networking site for college students, and that's what it should have remained! Facebook was nothing like Myspace, and that was always its appeal. Your friends saw "John Smith" and they knew who you were...now what??? They see user-name "Bballstarrr333" and they're supposed to know who that is?! I think not. The changes Facebook is making are out of control and beyond stupid, and especially...I think they'll regret this one.

I AGREE, There is to much nonsense connected with facebook now. It sounds difficult to try and get into Facebook now. Why not just keep it simple.
acrane0325 said 6:09PM on 6-12-2009
I agree. I joined Facebook because you generally knew who you were looking for and with whom you were talking. It was much more safe and public. Less people are willing to misbehave and do things that are not acceptable if it is public. Now they can hide behind a URL. My older kids have been allowed to use it for the features of a more family oriented atmosphere. I think that they may lose many people over this especially families that are on it.

Parents please watch your teens if they have a Facebook account. There is a spot on Facebook called the "Bathroom Wall" that allows teens to post short stroies. Some of these stories are pornographic. It would also be an easy place for a predator to scope out a teen.

yep! better watch out for those darn teens and their internets. honestly, if your child is stupid enough to write pornographic stories or meet someone from a networking site, don't blame the site, blame yourself for raising your kid to be that dumb.

I've been on myspace since 2004 and I've just recently got a Facebook. I don't like it AT ALL! I get requests to applications all day long that I've blocked a billion times. I see when my friends comment on other peoples crap, which is stupid. I don't like how I can't make my page nice or with music. I just don't like FB at all. So this big change means absolutely nothing to me. I think all these networking sites are pointless for some. I know most of my friends have 3 or more sites! And what's really funny is that they have the same friends they do on another site. lol! I got rid of my facebook. Kept my myspace and still don't respond to my friends' stuff. I CALL THEM. Which probably irritates them but I'm old fashioned and I like personal communication. Don't ask me how I'm doing when you have my phone number!

I totally agree with you about Facebook. I love myspace much more. I love being able to change thing like my background and music. And I hate all the applications stuff that Facebook has on it!
norest4dagriffin said 7:41PM on 10-11-2009
how have you been on myspace since 2004 when it was started in 2005?
carlalfrey said 6:48PM on 6-12-2009
Cher, I read your response and I totally agree with your attitude about a phone call
is just a minute away or at least email me. I have not joined any of these spaces
due to just this fact. I do not like sharing infomation that someone else can get a hold of. I realize it is the senders responsibility but I have seen to many bad things
come out of these different social nets no disrespect to your usage to have one of my own. Anyway thank you for your comment.

They should have explained this better in the little pop on everyone's homepage. Getting a username means that your URL will be customizable. So I give my facebook URL to someone so they can go directly to my page. For instance if my name was Jane Doe, my URL could be http:/ / www. facebook.com/janedoe. That's all it is. No one you know will have a new name like "ii jUst B3 LuVIn Muh LiiiifEE 2009." Unless they want that as their URL. But you shouldn't be friends with those people anyway.
