On the other hand, it's classified in the DSM-IV (basically the psychologist's handbook of disorders) because it's a pattern of thinking that leads to harm.

A support group for people with anorexia sounds great, but not if it covers up the risks of continuing anorexic behavior. (Anorexia over time has many adverse effects: bone loss, osteoporosis, loss of fertility, lack of proper brain development, etc.) The human body is in danger of so many things if it's not being sustained.

I guess I just wouldn't want to see an impressionable individual go to this website and think that it's fine or remotely health to continue with some level of anorexia. If the website is clear about this, I'd say the decision rests with the individual. If not, this could actually be dangerous.

bkwormsjv

Comments on The Web's Most Controversial Sites

It's your choice to do anything! I have been on this site before and several other sites like this. As much as I enjoy talking to people who do not judge me, I am left with guilt because I've seen 13 year old girls asking me how much weight they can lose by not eating. Then again, this shouldn't make ME feel guilty. Its a site for Anorexics. If your young teenage daughter/son is on sites like these asking to lose weight, or 'learning' to be anorexic then the problem is the parents, not the site.

hausofkate

Comments on The Web's Most Controversial Sites

I am naturally skinny and I do not want to be fat or skinny. I want to be healthy. I have a fast metabolism so I don't have other problems that most people have gaining weight. I love junk food but do not eat it often. I grew up in a household where it is healthy eating. Almost every meal was cooked at home, not from t a fast food place. So, maybe that is why I am so thin. I always say and said that if anyone came to stay with my family, they would end up losing weight since they would not eat junk food but fresh food. I eat till I am full. I eat when I am hungry, not when I am not bored or emotional.

This anorexia seems to be a cultural problem. In my family and culture, people wanted to look curvy not skinny. You get chastised if your skinny and curvy people are admired. Strange how cultures can be so different and create different social problems.

akashaqueeeenotd
