i think it has more to do with the fact that if you have facebook there is no point in twitter.

That is so not true! I know so many people that have both. More people are inclined to go to twitter when they want to contact someone directly, especially when they know that the person has it on their cellphone, the mobile twitting is key here!
I twit with my siblings all the time and we all have facebook as well. Twitter is just faster!
