Morning Xtra: German 'Twittergate,' Stem-Cell-Coated Contact Lenses

AT&T CEO Says Company Wasn't Ready for the iPhone

Man, we're hearing all kind of interesting tidbits from the ongoing "D: All Things Digital" conference: Yesterday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted to Wall Street Journal writer Walt Mossberg that the company's network was not ready for the iPhone when it was released. That makes sense, since iPhone service has been less than stellar for many users, but dang -- admitting to the world that you weren't ready to handle one of the most hyped gadgets of all time? Sounds like fodder for a class-action suit. [From: Daily Finance]

German 'Twittergate' Scandal Has Lederhosen In A Twist
A scandal that has become known as "Twittergate" is rocking the world of German politics. Last Saturday, news that Hörst Köhler had be re-elected as Germany's president leaked onto Twitter a full 15 minutes before the official results (gasp!). The premature tweets were the work of members of parliament who were privy to the results. [From: The Telegraph]

Plastic Logic's E-Book Reader Has 3G

Amazon's Kindle series of e-book readers may soon have some powerful competition -- according to GeekSugar, California-based Plastic Logic will be bringing its all-touchscreen e-reader to market next year. The thin device will be 3G capable and supposedly support Microsoft Office applications like PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Can your Kindle do that? (Answer: no it can't) [From: GeekSugar and Engadget]

Officers Stumble Upon YouTube Beating, Arrest 15-Year-Old
A 15-year-old in Douglas County, Georgia was arrested after law enforcement stumbled upon a YouTube video of the teen beating up another 15-year-old. Apparently, the video (shot on a cameraphone) made the rounds online, but was never noticed by teachers or administrators. [From: 11Alive]

Stem Cell-Coated Contact Lenses Heal Eyes, Restore Sight
Thought stem cells were only good for fiery, rhetoric-filled political debates? A group of researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia have developed a technique to heal corneal damage and restore sight to people. The (relatively) simple technique involves growing stem cells from the patient on a contact lens, and then placing the lens in the eye for three weeks. The cells transfer to the patient's eye, healing the damage without the rejection risk of a corneal transplant. [From: DVICE]

Blame Texting For Yet Another Road Death
We know you're probably as sick of these stories as we are, but until people get the picture, we'll keep posting them: Officials are blaming text messaging for the truck accident that led to the death of 26-year-old Canadian Michael Edward Wolsynuk. According CBC News, Wolsynuk sent a text message "moments before the collision." Combine that with wet roads, bald tires, and no seatbelt and you have a bad situation -- shortly after texting, Wolsynuk's truck crossed the center-line and collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. 'Sonic' On Your iPhone, Game Gear Spinning In Its Grave
All you Sonic fans out there, rejoice. The original 'Sonic the Hedgehog' is now available as a game for the iPhone and iPod touch and it's only $5.99. According to Crave's tester Nate Lanxon, the game plays surprisingly well considering the lack of physical buttons (the game uses virtual buttons onscreen). We might have to check it out.
