Baby Boomers Quitting Facebook

Facebook may be losing ground among its older users, according to Inside Facebook.
Over the past few months, baby boomers joined the popular social networking site in droves, creating some inter-generational tensions in the process. From February and March, though, to April and May, that trend seems to have reversed. According to data that Facebook supplies to its advertisers, the 55-to-65-year-old age group's activity has drastically declined over the past couple months (by 651,080, to be exact), making it the only demographic to experience an overall drop in numbers.
The data is not accompanied by any reasons why baby boomers are quitting, but Inside Facebook wonders if the over-55 set just hasn't figured out how to use the real-time updates that were implemented on social network's recent facelift. Then again, it could be all the phishing scams that have surfaced on the service lately. We think it might just be because half the time we try to send messages on social network, we get an error message telling us to log in again (very annoying), or any of a myriad of other reasons to quit Facebook.
While their parents seem to be fleeing Facebook, 18-to-25-year olds are spending more time on the site than ever. Since the end of March, nearly 2 million new members have joined up in that age bracket. The root of these developing Facebook trends? We'd bet that those Gen Y-ers, finding themselves unemployed and out of school, are aiming to waste some time and distract themselves. Meanwhile, we'd guess that their parents, in light of their companies' tightening belts, are laying off the during-office-hours browsing.
How about you? Are you still on Facebook? Have you thought about quitting? We have -- check out some of our reasons, by clicking 'Next,' below. [Via Business Insider]

Who cares?
HogstonMay 27th 2009 5:01PM
I can't believe I wasted time reading this.
In summary:
1. Facebook is for job-less (was the implication drop-out?) beatniks with nothing else to do.
2. 55-65 year olds are leaving a networking site that was designed for college students.
Top notch journalism.

My opinion is because people are finally realizing how self-indulgent this is. Who cares who's going to be late for school and they had a tired day at the office. It's called life, people. If you really think we're that interested in your comings and goings, you are way too self absorbed.

It's those stupid applications. I am young & facebook annoys me. The interface is crowded & ugly. I actually prefer myspace, but people are less into social networking lately.

I joined because a friend invited me. I find the site to be childish and trivial and a complete waste of time. I see no point in 99% of the info put on the site.

Could it be that AOL is trying to convince people that someone is actually leaving Facebook. It does not appear to me that there is a generational issue or a mass exodus. AOL is evil.

I'm a baby boomer and some of the sites get me lost. They are hard to get around and I know you kids get it quicker than we do. Some of them are like a sex training camp. I'm not interested in that and it is thrown in your face, all the time. It's like, that is all that is on their brain. I'm not dead but I know what is important in life. Isn't there anything else going on in their lives? A lot of people would say I'm an ole' fogey. Maybe I am but I always say if it isn't broken, don't fix it. A lot of the younger generation tried to fix our generation. Well, big mistake! There's a lot of things, these days that is broken and some of it is the social sites. They need to be fixed. I want to be able to control my page. If I have children or my family near, I want them to be able to disagree with what they see. These companies make billions of dollars on people, like us. I said billions, not millions. Where does it get us? If I'm on a site, stuffing green backs into their pockets, I'd like some.....well.....I'd like a lot pushed my way. I'd like to be paid for everything I do. If I look at a video....PAY ME! If I open and send e-mail....PAY ME! If I do a survey, blog, make a comment, or play a game.....PAY ME! If YOU do these things on my site.....PAY YOU! They can afford it. You can enjoy what you do and it is made simple. Send me an e-mail and I'll let you know, it can happen for YOU. KSBaucum@gmail.com

or maybe they're quitting because facebook is so freaking hard to use.
Sunny HarrisMay 27th 2009 6:08PM
OMG!! I'm in my 50's and just on Facebook a few months ago! If anyone thinks we CANNOT figure this thing out, you're crazy! I know how to get around FB and I actually figured out how to upload photos! If anything, it's that it seems kind of mindless and BORING to me! And, do I really need to get messages that ASHTON KUTCHER is trying to be my FRIEND???
I'll stay on FB for while----even though my 23-year old son is shocked that I can read his messages to his friends! I love that part of Facebook!!

You sound surprised there is a bad article on AOL. All I ever see is a bunch of regurgitated artitles written by a bunch of spammers in between selling our email adresses.

I always thought facebook was boring i like myspace better
blahblahblahMay 27th 2009 6:10PM
Why does AOL always try to prove that Facebook sucks? Some people like it and some people don't. Get over it. -_-"
elliesMay 27th 2009 6:18PM
my bottom line with facebook is that as a babyboomer, i have very little time to spend online. myself and most people my age have extremely taxing jobs and responsibilites. it is not the norm to be online at work unless it is work. we use it as a tool to help up keep contact with very close family and friends. i dont think baby boomers have difficulty using facebook--its very easy and were kinda smart......
Heidi (2)May 27th 2009 6:15PM
I'm 54 and very tech savvy. I guarantee that boomers aren't leaving because they can't figure out how to use Facebook. I don't want to speak for others, but Facebook seems rather pointless. It seems the under-25 crowd believes that the world cares what they're doing every minute of every day. I don't flatter myself that I have anything to say that's all that interesting--but if I do write something, at least everything will be spelled correctly, which is more than I can say about much of what I see on Facebook, Yahoo Answers, and any other venue where these kids share the trivial details of their lives.
BPV777May 27th 2009 6:33PM
It's probably because the older folks are much wiser and they realize that Facebook and Myspace are ultimately run by the Department of Defense and CIA. They data-base and analize all of the users personal information. The Government wants to know every single detail about every individuals personal life. Sorry f**ks! Please wake up AMERICA, before it's to late. ;(
