Baby Boomers Quitting Facebook

Facebook may be losing ground among its older users, according to Inside Facebook.
Over the past few months, baby boomers joined the popular social networking site in droves, creating some inter-generational tensions in the process. From February and March, though, to April and May, that trend seems to have reversed. According to data that Facebook supplies to its advertisers, the 55-to-65-year-old age group's activity has drastically declined over the past couple months (by 651,080, to be exact), making it the only demographic to experience an overall drop in numbers.
The data is not accompanied by any reasons why baby boomers are quitting, but Inside Facebook wonders if the over-55 set just hasn't figured out how to use the real-time updates that were implemented on social network's recent facelift. Then again, it could be all the phishing scams that have surfaced on the service lately. We think it might just be because half the time we try to send messages on social network, we get an error message telling us to log in again (very annoying), or any of a myriad of other reasons to quit Facebook.
While their parents seem to be fleeing Facebook, 18-to-25-year olds are spending more time on the site than ever. Since the end of March, nearly 2 million new members have joined up in that age bracket. The root of these developing Facebook trends? We'd bet that those Gen Y-ers, finding themselves unemployed and out of school, are aiming to waste some time and distract themselves. Meanwhile, we'd guess that their parents, in light of their companies' tightening belts, are laying off the during-office-hours browsing.
How about you? Are you still on Facebook? Have you thought about quitting? We have -- check out some of our reasons, by clicking 'Next,' below. [Via Business Insider]

The ironic thing is that I joined within the past couple of months (I'm 48), and DROVES of my former classmates and friends that I hadn't connected with began to join, as well. And my age group is VERY prolific. We're reaching the age where our kids are beginning to be more into their own friends, leaving us idle and pathetic. We share stories of times past, and post zillions of photos of our kids. Of course, then we find our kids on there, and there, too, and they don't really care to have us as their 'friends' on fb. They have to modify their posts, knowing their parents, aunties, or mom's friend might see. LOL

Well, let me explain why Facebook is great.
I don't network, that's for unkown people with a "I don't care product".
I pay people I owe.
I don't buy things on credit (money I don't have).
I have morals and live by the (sometimes stupid) law.
I am married, love my husband, and STAY out of people's lives, that, don't want advice.
I USE FACEBOOK TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS.
With such a large family on both sides, (we have over 250) we get the message out fast to all (if someone passes away, baby born, or someone's ill.
The ages of our family are 18yrs to 75yrs old.
You have to be an adult in our family to use the internet unsupervised. If I have to "HIDE" something from someone, I must be guilty.
Hmmmmmmm.......................think about it. We all have choices to be mean or good.

Ever notice that AOL is constantly running negative articles on Facebook? They even have the "reasons to quit Facebook". What is their problem with it? Do they own Myspace and dont like the competition? I have NEVER had a problem with Myspace and neither has my family or friends. Stop the one sided "reporting" AOL.

Error: Meant I have never had a problem with Facebook!

Aol thrives off negativety they do it in almost all their article whether facebook, death, or Religion always.

My daughter invited me and I had to sign up to be able to view her site. I did, but didn't do a profile because I didn't want a site. I started getting invitations to other sites for people I didn't know and had to go back to facebook to reject the offer. ID pics for some were porno with the request to accept or reject. I rejected. I didn't appreciate the offers. I also found it difficult to try to look up people I know. Never again.

Maybe it's because the older we are, the less we understand the point of sites like Twitter. As Facebook inexplicably tries to become Twitter 2.0, they'll continue to lose the crowd who misses the point.

I find a lot of the apps stupid like Mafia Wars - boring and it seems to me to glorify crime. I know it's supposed to just be fun, but not for me. No desire to conduct virtual crimes, no desire to join Yoville, and no desire to take any more IQ quizzes that want me to enter my cell number and charge me $9.99 to get the results. (BTW, before I took one of those, it says "Today's high score 137!" I got 10 out of 10 correct and could only get 135.
I like being able to connect with friends, especially ones I've not seen in years. But don't ask me to play your stupid games!

listen everyone, facebook is the worse internet past-time you can get into.people can steal your identity, i think all face book users should get a life.i cannot even cancel my facebook. you can do something more constructive with your time instead of roaming facebook to pry into people private life.
suitman36May 27th 2009 3:56PM
well....i joined facebook at the request of some people i graduated high school with. i enjoy the re-connecting with old friends. but, the people who make inane conversation telling the world what they are doing are, to me, just people starved for attention. who cares what you are cooking for dinner? who cares that you just watered your plants? those types of things are pretty petty to me.
Llynne10May 27th 2009 4:05PM
No kidding! I couldn't believe people were saying things like, "I need to run to the store now" or I'm packing for a trip" ..... "almost finished packing" then later, "all packed" and "leaving now" ..... What the ????? They must not have anything better to do. (maybe like me right now) ha ... but just had to vent.
You're SO right.
Llynne10May 27th 2009 4:04PM
I guess us older folks just have better things to do than spend hours at a computer. Weather is nice... and we're pretty good at looking people in the eye to talk to them. (now there's a thought) Maybe we're figuring out that life is just to short to dink around with such foolishness.

I'm really starting to wonder if the clown who writes the stories about Facebook doesn't have stock in another site. He always writes these stories but doesn't give facts. By the way for everyone person who drops out, how many end up signing up? More then the 650,000 right. The site is easy to use, I have gotten in touch with family and friends around the world. Great way of knowing what their up too. Not to mention old friends you thought you would never talk to again
