Most Folks Quit Twitter After One Month -- Why?

For a service that enjoys considerable popularity amongst celebrities and the tech-elite, it's shocking that Twitter can't seem to hold on to customers. Adam Sternbergh of New York Magazine suggests that maybe Twitter just isn't meant for the general public. Sternbergh wonders, "Just what is [Twitter] good for?"
Here's an intriguing answer courtesy of a NY Magazine commenter: Twitter is perfect for "involving your brand in relevant conversations." Your brand? As a writer, politician, celebrity, etc. your name is your brand. And, as Sternbergh notes, these are exactly the types of people who, "think that their every stray thought is publishable poetry."
He may be on to something, but we think it's too soon to tell. What do you think? Is Twitter less a social networking tool and more a marketing tool for the self-absorbed? [From: NYMag.com]

I see twitter as both a marketing tool and a social tool. What's nice about it is that you get to see thousands of people type in 140 characters or less and so you get a quick view of these individuals instead of having to travel from one site to the next. You can get a lot of info in a short period of time.

Who really uses the term "folks" when referring to "people"? Especially in a journalistic capacity. This is the internet, not a local news station in the deep south.

It's a tech blog, I think the point is to dress it down and use more accessible language. Are you new to this whole "Web 2.0" thing?

Um, because Twitter is very poorly run and is rather trigger happy with their banning system? I'm still waiting for someone to take my account off of suspension. I love Twitter as a service but as a company they suck.
I still can't find anywhere on their site where I can directly talk to them, they still use other services for their help desk and that's very unprofessional and really not a good way to do business.

Some reasons why Twitter is popular:
1. Vanity
2. Voyeurism
3. Perceived intimacy/closeness to celebrities

It's annoying. I agree with the writer about "just who" thinks we all need to hear about their every move or thought. Some huge Egos walking around out there. From all that I've seen, I don't think anyone's activities are more important than each of us living and enjoying our own lives. Focusing on someone else's life is sort of giving our own power away, a wasting of our time... If you have a life, then you don't have time to follow "Twits" on Twitter. Nuff said.

My opinion of Twitter is nothing more than a cyber herd movement with a lesser purpose than facebook or multiply.
A site that is built around one question, “What are you doing?” is potentially one of the most clever creations, but it seems to be geared towards people without important things to do except update the world on their whereabouts.
While cyber technology continues to advance, it’s consequently robbing humanity of the human relations.

Twitter is the perfect outlet for the narcissist in all of us. It's just that most of us don't like the narcissist in us very much so we don't let it out too often. Twitter let's us think what we have to say is important enough to be posted to the entire world and let's those who's life is so boring that what we have to say is entertaining freely peruse our musings.
Actually it is pretty stupid.

I think people should use twitter filming themselves texting on their phones while driving so everyone can see their car crashes.

If you don't read fluent English, Twitter explanations are rather difficult to understand. My mother and my collegues can't achieve it (I'm french).
