Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

Filmmaker Ellen Seidler told SheWired.com that Facebook sent her a rejection notice saying the image was "either irrelevant or inappropriate." The letter went on to spell out that, "Images that are overly explicit, provocative, or that reveal too much skin are not allowed. Images that may either degrade or idealize any health condition or body type are also not allowed."

| No | |
| I'm not sure. |
However, a quick perusal of ads on Facebook (which users can mark as inappropriate themselves if they are offended) show plenty of images of women and men in far less clothing, covered in blood, or in a (straight) lover's embrace. It would appear that, while certainly playful and suggestive, what really has the Facebook ad approvers worried is that the image is of three lesbians.
'And Then Came Lola' has a Facebook fan page, which has become a place for the filmmakers to draw attention to the double standard being applied by the social networking service when it comes to ads. They've posted images of several Facebook-approved ads that the creators feel are just as suggestive, if not more so, than their own rejected advertisement.
Facebook hasn't responded yet, so we'll hold off on throwing rotten fruit for the moment, but the company is going to have to some serious digging to get themselves out of this hole. [From: Jezebel and SheWired.com]
Are These Games Too Sexy?
While recent game titles have attracted media attention for nudity and sexual situations, risque role-playing games have existed since PC gaming first began. Early games, such as 'Sex Games' for the Commodore 64, demanded specific commands, such as "remove pants," and required specific sequential actions to achieve one's nefarious goals. Currently, a plethora of games with bawdy scenes have invaded, or graced, the gaming world and vary in degrees of lewdness. Here are a few significant titles with prevalent or graphic bawdiness:
'God of War I & II:'
Press the right buttons, and gently twirl the thumbstick, to see the climax of mini-games in both God of War I and II for PS2 and PSP
'Grand Theft Auto III (consoles)'
The infamous "don't come a knockin'" prostitute scenes created a stir when GTA 3 was originally released for PS2.
'Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude; Box Office or Bust' (for consoles):
These most recent incarnations continue to follow the exploits of love lorn Larry in versions for both PC and next gen consoles
'Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals' (for PC)
Released in 1989 for PCs, this third installment of the groundbreaking franchise of risque role playing preceded GTA 4 by 20 years when the title character shows the full Larry in an infamous shower scene
'Mass Effect:'
The backlash from FoxNews greatly exaggerated the tame innuendo and implied relations between the two sapphic lovers in Xbox's Mass Effect.
'Playboy: The Mansion' (consoles):
Disappointingly demure, perhaps the highlight of this sojourn to the mansion is playing photographer in this release for PC, PS2 and Xbox
'Rapelay:'
Amazon removed listings for this disturbing, yet readily available in Japan, DVD-ROM in which the main character stalks and, to put it mildly, torments young girls.
'The Sims;' nude patch:
Denisons of young gamers were disappointed when learning that unblurred nudity in this game for PCs, consoles, and handhelds required downloading a censor patch
'Soul Calibur' (consoles):
The character Taki from the Soul Calibur franchise continues to titillate thousands of pubescent gamers in versions for every console.

VictoriaApr 28th 2009 11:46AM
First of all, the people that rejected this were not "racist..." that would refer to a race. Not homo or lez...Second, Facebook does not show risque ads at all, I've never seen a racy one thus far. This ad is inappropriate. All of you crying "racist," get over it, and get a brain.

Yea, someone enforcing standards. Clean up America's airwaves and ewaves.
DApr 28th 2009 11:48AM
This picture is no more racy or permiscuous or anything really then some of the photos I have seen on Facebook. I myself have a facebook account and I don't find this picture in any way shape or form offensive. Most of these people are right, if this had been some ad for fruit of the loom or something like that it would be okay, but because it's an ad for a lesbian oriented movie they rejected it. Using the fact that it's racy is just a BS excuse to say "we don't approve of the lesbian culture". Their own little way of skating by with discrimination. Shame on you facebook. Shame on you for being so ignorant when it comes to "monitoring" your own social networking web site.

Overt ads to non-traditional relationships do not have a place in mainstream advertising. Ads such as this are better off placed in targeted locals, such as GLB magazines and such. That way, those offended by them are not exposed to them. While a double standard, it plays into those that WANT to see that type of content will be exposed to it when they are already within a system that is targeted to that content. To continue the double standard, if these are lipstick lesbos most men would be OK with it, but if they are butchy or even worse Guys, then NFW. Bareback Mountain ads that are sugestive have No Place in the mainstream media, no matter what Liberal Hollywierd wants.

Can you say HYPOCRISY?
Facebook thinks nothing of allowing all their crazy programs to dig for your personal info (Their IQ test which keeps popping up no matter what you do is one way).
AOL and FACEBOOK want the Gay dollar.....but, not the Gays. HYPOCRISY!
As for the BIGOTS out there. Which BIBLE are you reading? The one teaching LOVE and Forgiveness (and letting GOD Judge)?
Or the AMERICAN FASCIST version that Racists used to keep Blacks in slavery for 400 years ("It's in the Bible" they said), or women without the vote and God hating Gays?
Most people.....studies have shown...that yell the LOUDEST against Gay people ..usually are unsusre of their OWN sexuality.
Grow up children!
Most people would not even KNOW that was a Gay ad unless told. Whoever said it could be an underwear ad was SO right. Kids who can't yet read....would have no clue (besides they should not be on Facebook under age 18 without parental supervision)...and I would suggest you complaing about STRAIGHT things Facebook offers that are sexually suggestive...(including MUCH Hotter scenese from straight movies.
Again...bigots and unedecuated. GROW up! The guys who complain the most are probably the LEAST attractive men anyway. NO Gay would even look at most beer bellied, unshaven hypocrits.
GROW UP!

can you get out of a speeding ticket if you show that someone else is driving over the limit and didn't get a ticket. Facebook has done nothing wrong. Sorry gay mafia

If this threesome picture was two men and woman - everyone would be up in arms. If the picture was of 2 women only I would say it was fine but having 3 women (or men or mix) in the picture assumes this is a sexual event. So Facebook I agree with you on taking down the photo - not becuase it shows lesbians (who really cares anymore) but I think it the fact that is 3 people obviously getting ready for sex....that is why they deinied the ad!
Show me pictures of half naked men and women together with the "sex: look, and I would say deny that ad too.....
daniel_whitney2001Apr 28th 2009 12:21PM
I for one am not scared of the gay/lesbian movement. I am not worried about someone coming onto me. Why I am against this ad and the movement is because it is morally wrong. The human anatomy does not support this show of affection. The human body is made for a male and a woman to procreate. So first off you are defying nature. Second off I am a Christian and I can not support a life style that is fully indulged in sin. I understand that there are many other types of sin out there, and that everyone is a sinner. I don't condone many other actions like sex before marriage. But living as an active gay/lesbian is a constant life style in sin. I do not do this because I hate gay/lesbian, I do this because I have to stand up for what I know is right. God loves the person and not the sin, but God can not tolerate sin. So for someone to enter heaven they have to be without sin. Jesus said that I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father but through me. See for us to have eternal salvation and everlasting life we must be without sin. The only way to do this is to accept his son Jesus as lord and savior and that he died his sinless life for all of us so that we can be without sin. No matter what you have done or do, if you believe in Jesus and ask for forgiveness and turn from wicked ways then you will be a child of God and have everlasting life. I do not shun someone is gay/lesbian but I have to be honest, it is the only way that their blood is not on my hands, I have done what I can. If God loves the person and not the sin, Christians should not just spew out hate and hate sinners including gay/lesbian. God loves them and desires for them to be saved like every human. That is where we are wrong. Jesus would not hate these people. He hung out with the sinners and tried to minister to them. I guess I just kept rambling on. But this is a message to Christians, Gay/Lesbians, and everyone else.

I REALLY just need to know if that's Mary Louise Parker in that picture. That's ALL I wanna know.

Unfortunately, no it's not...I would be in line to see that movie if it were!!
pwanlessApr 28th 2009 12:00PM
I wonder if a similar photo of males would have been rejected.

Stop Crying Homo's and get over it. and stop trying to force me and others your crap!!!!
joanna2080Apr 28th 2009 12:03PM
I'm not homophobic. My sister is lesbian and I love her dearly. I don't think it's the homoerotic overtones of the picure, it's the depiction of 3-way sex that is the problem. Group sex has associations of being experimental, casual, and possibly indiscriminate. It seems the goal of the picture is to be sensationalist & provocative. Since this is just a photo out of context no one knows what the relationships are, but the focus has been put on the sex, not the emotional relationships. Gay or straight, I think the implied casual sex is what is offensive. Facebook allowed other ads that showed more skin or were very sexually suggestive, but depicting couple (implied committed) relationships. Calculated or not, they succeeded in using a provocative photo in order to garner attention for their film. Cheap shot (double intendre intended).
DApr 28th 2009 12:06PM
can you get out of a speeding ticket if you show that someone else is driving over the limit and didn't get a ticket.
I'm going to point out that the C in can should be capital, and there should be a question mark at the end of this since I'm assuming you were asking a question....
And yes, you can, and I have. So using this as an example makes no sense what so ever and saying sorry to the "gay mafia" at the end also makes no sense. And yes, facebook, in their own way of skating by rules, has done something wrong. If they are going to "decided" that this picture too racy for their site then they need to start monitoring what they allow their users to post. I've seen much worse than this photo on their site. So it's simply that they don't "approve" of the movie because of its orientation. This is discrimination and this is wrong.

NOCTURNAL ... i have studied evolution and darwin's theory of
natural selection .. you should too ... i don't disagree that
homosexuals are born that way .. i never stated that .. i assume
you have first hand knowledge of that .. i don't care how homosexuals
became homosexuals .. i don't care that there are homosexuals
period ... i just don't want this queer thing thrown up in my face like
they are so prone to do ...our sexuality is not something to be flaunted,
in parades and public demonstrations ..
. the fact is you can not reproduce with a same sex marriage ..
no matter how many straight couples have gay children ...
by admitting this you must believe that it must be a mutation ..
very interesting concept !!.. but you still haven't
shown me how this mutation can reproduce itself .. and a mutation
is just part of the natural selection that Darwin professed ..eventually
it will be mutated out .. or take over .. which in this case is an
impossibility ... Review the Natural Selection part of Darwin's
theory ... !! then read about our closest human species , the
Neanderthals and what happened to them .. !! That can be your
homework assignment , ok ?
