Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

Filmmaker Ellen Seidler told SheWired.com that Facebook sent her a rejection notice saying the image was "either irrelevant or inappropriate." The letter went on to spell out that, "Images that are overly explicit, provocative, or that reveal too much skin are not allowed. Images that may either degrade or idealize any health condition or body type are also not allowed."

| I'm not sure. |
However, a quick perusal of ads on Facebook (which users can mark as inappropriate themselves if they are offended) show plenty of images of women and men in far less clothing, covered in blood, or in a (straight) lover's embrace. It would appear that, while certainly playful and suggestive, what really has the Facebook ad approvers worried is that the image is of three lesbians.
'And Then Came Lola' has a Facebook fan page, which has become a place for the filmmakers to draw attention to the double standard being applied by the social networking service when it comes to ads. They've posted images of several Facebook-approved ads that the creators feel are just as suggestive, if not more so, than their own rejected advertisement.
Facebook hasn't responded yet, so we'll hold off on throwing rotten fruit for the moment, but the company is going to have to some serious digging to get themselves out of this hole. [From: Jezebel and SheWired.com]
Are These Games Too Sexy?
While recent game titles have attracted media attention for nudity and sexual situations, risque role-playing games have existed since PC gaming first began. Early games, such as 'Sex Games' for the Commodore 64, demanded specific commands, such as "remove pants," and required specific sequential actions to achieve one's nefarious goals. Currently, a plethora of games with bawdy scenes have invaded, or graced, the gaming world and vary in degrees of lewdness. Here are a few significant titles with prevalent or graphic bawdiness:
'God of War I & II:'
Press the right buttons, and gently twirl the thumbstick, to see the climax of mini-games in both God of War I and II for PS2 and PSP
'Grand Theft Auto III (consoles)'
The infamous "don't come a knockin'" prostitute scenes created a stir when GTA 3 was originally released for PS2.
'Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude; Box Office or Bust' (for consoles):
These most recent incarnations continue to follow the exploits of love lorn Larry in versions for both PC and next gen consoles
'Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals' (for PC)
Released in 1989 for PCs, this third installment of the groundbreaking franchise of risque role playing preceded GTA 4 by 20 years when the title character shows the full Larry in an infamous shower scene
'Mass Effect:'
The backlash from FoxNews greatly exaggerated the tame innuendo and implied relations between the two sapphic lovers in Xbox's Mass Effect.
'Playboy: The Mansion' (consoles):
Disappointingly demure, perhaps the highlight of this sojourn to the mansion is playing photographer in this release for PC, PS2 and Xbox
'Rapelay:'
Amazon removed listings for this disturbing, yet readily available in Japan, DVD-ROM in which the main character stalks and, to put it mildly, torments young girls.
'The Sims;' nude patch:
Denisons of young gamers were disappointed when learning that unblurred nudity in this game for PCs, consoles, and handhelds required downloading a censor patch
'Soul Calibur' (consoles):
The character Taki from the Soul Calibur franchise continues to titillate thousands of pubescent gamers in versions for every console.

it was a "targeted" ads people-designed to be seen by women over 18 who identify as being interested in women-that is the whole point
laughingiamMay 1st 2009 12:10AM
Duh, the ad was not for all the people on facebook idiots. And, btw, all three women are OUT actresses.
The ad was not meant for you and Facebook has now approved it. Guess they saw the hypocrisy of rejecting this ad while approving other crap all over the place.

I am gay, and I think the photo is out of line, facebook is not the place for sexual anything. You have 3 women, touching each other (My personal nightmare JK), even if it were male-female, male-male, male-animal it should not be posted on a family site like Facebook.
The good thing about the USA is, you can be homophobic, you can be racist.... you can be involved in whatever hate category you want, as long as it does not physically hurt anyone. I am ok with that, totally.
Once people realize I am living my life the way God Intended (He made me in his own image), I am sure they will come around. I just don't have the desire to deal with or educate ignorant people at this point of my life.

"I am gay...I am living my life the way God Intended"
I don't think so. Homosexuality is an abomination in God's eye

This is my friend's film! Jill Bennett is great! Some people are uncomfortable with inter-racial relationships - should that be banned too? Unlike MySpace, everyone on Facebook is supposed to be an adult, so if you're too insecure or immature to handle this, go crawl back under a rock. Get over it. If not, you're giving my friend some free publicity.

Stop trying to force your lifestyle on others. It's their site. They can do what they want. It wasn't racy at all. But three, butch women? Ew.

If facebook wants to deny the add it is fine. They have to be responsible in what they put their name behind and that add is overly sexual. Also they may not want to be known as supporters of homosexuality........that is THEIR RIGHT. Tolerance works both ways.

Though I am against the gay life-style, I am NOT “against” gay “people”. I am NOT going to harass and try to harm someone who claims to be gay. For the record, I would stand up in defense if someone else were harassing them. I have relatives who say they’re gay. I love them regardless and enjoy spending time with them. What I don’t like is when people who live the gay life-style try to shove it in my face and become livid when you state a differing opinion. Case in point, Carrie Prejean was taken to task because of her recent answer regarding this very issue. Though I’m not certain I believe her remarks in reference to the photos, the photos most likely would not have been brought to light if she had answered “politically correct”. Though Perez Hilton had the right to ask the question, he should have accepted it and moved on. I have the right to stand on my beliefs and convictions and understanding of the Bible just as much as anyone does. I don’t try to shove Christianity down anyone’s throat. All a person can do is be their best authentic self. Everyone could get along so much better if they would just stop trying to convince the other of how wrong they are. Love, kindness and compassion go a long way in helping people agree-to-disagree until a true reconciliation can be reached.

I'm hating facebook also now I've had my account on there for over a year. About 8 days ago I go to sign on and it's disable. I sent a request to find out why and I still haven't found out. I don't have any nudity on my site or anything I would call offensive. If those are the reasons please be like myspace and just delete and move on or at least send a warning or something.
Someone said it might of been cause I added to many friends to quickly. This is the reason it maybe cause they allow applications on there system that require you to make friends with people so you can be competive in the game. I also sent a note to the maker of the game so if this is the case they need to have dialog with the facebook.
I'm still waiting on facebook as of today. I pretty much wrote them off.

They don't look like Lesbians, they just look like friends in a 'group hug',or something, like on "Golden Girls". AOL,or the Media says something is bad, or too racy, then they post it on line, and it goes all over the World, for everybody to see, anyway, including kids. Double standard.
intellerMay 22nd 2009 1:17PM
the rejected it for false advertisement. Everyone knows that lesbians never look that good, yet alone that many good looking ones in one place.
sonicsizeme36May 22nd 2009 7:38PM
I'm gay and there are NOT enough gay ads on Facebook! :)
mulloverthisblogMay 25th 2009 7:27AM
Three women-one with a hand on the rear end of the woman in the middle and the other hand in an embrace with the woman in the middle, and the other woman leaned in while alluding to kissing the woman in the middle, while her hand is underneath a top-and of course, this isn't too over the top. Nothing is, now is it? If they were in their birthday suits, it would be artisitic beauty. The problem is any rejection of gay/homosexual/lesbian anything is always over-read. This ad is as near lewd and suggestive as soft ___. If the filmmaker wants to suggest other themes, this ad emphasizes something else.
teageeleeMay 26th 2009 10:19AM
AJ121489 has commented on the so called 'lesbian ad' by saying, "...it shows three people in very suggestive poses". Does this mean that pictures of heterogeneous or homogeneous groups of people playing Twister should be denied, avoided, or maybe even censored? I for one have played Twister (not recently as everything moves badly at this age) and can say unequivocally that your face is going to end up in someone's behind as the game goes along. Does this mean that Twister is a tool of the lesbian and homosexual underground? Everytime we play it we come closer to coming out of the closet......AAAAARGH..
'nuff said'

I just think that this goes way beyond a homophobic based decision and just has to do with the lack of proper judgement as far as equal rights are concerned and the freedom of speech and the arts. I mean the "We are all created equal" statement has yet to be a reality within our society. The freedom to be whomever you are naturally is something that nobody has the right to take away or limit.
These unfortunate errors based on fear are just not acceptable and really shouldn´t be a part of what facebook engages in. Facebook shouldn´t be judgemental nor homophobic. It´s just wrong besides, it´s an ad for a film and those women in that ad are actresses. Sure it´s a lesbian movie but who is that going to hurt? No one.
If you choose not to watch it just don´t, it´s that simple however Facebook should be fair to everyone.
