Our collection of personal tech often resembles that scene from the movie 'Titanic' in which Rose wanders into the ship's vast engine room. The whooshing and clanking of giant pistons and the hiss of boilers make an impressive show of 20th Century steampunk automation, but the dozens of underpaid chumps shoveling coal into the machines do not.

You have plenty of high-tech toys -- PCs, cell phones, social-networking sites -- to make your life easier.
