Man Texts Suicide Note to Wife Before Leaping Off Cliff

Sadly, a British man didn't seem to care too much about texting etiquette when he used his handset to send a suicide note to his wife, according to today's report from Mirror.co.uk. Yesterday, a 46-year-old Lancashire man sent a photo of the cliffs above Gogarth Bay, along with a message declaring his intent to jump off of them, to his wife, who notified the authorities. Rescuers rushed to the scene in a helicopter in order to stop the man, but, tragically, were too late. They could only watch him leap to his death, landing on the rocks 500 feet below.
We know that, sometimes, a person can be hurting too much to bear speaking with anybody. But, we implore anybody who is thinking about suicide to reach for their phone and, instead of texting a loved one farewell, give these folks a call. [From: Mirror.co.uk]

Texting is just another one og the useless things we can do without!
There are too many phones without.texting ! I our small mall we have ten different cell phones available!
The same thing will happen as with auto's ! there are so many that people don't know which one to by and we have a glut of cars!

Please structure your posts better. You start out dissing texting but then go on to just a complete jumbled mess.
I agree, we could do without texting. I remember I used to send maybe 10 messages a month, now I wonder how I could even try to do that if I wanted to. I hate texting and would love to give it up, but society does not allow for it.

Society won't allow you to quit texting??? I've lived 45+ years and I've NEVER sent a text. Ever. And, I bet I never will. I have e-mail. If I feel like typing, I use that. If I need to speak to someone, I use the damn phone! I've always said most phone calls are useless and nothing important is ever said after the first three minutes. I'd go so far as to say nearly ALL text messages are useless and nothing important is ever said after the first word (if you can call the contrived abbreviations used for texting "words").

Sweet response time if they actually did see him leap to his death. Maybe they need some guest worker visas and some jobs at my local dispatch here.

Here in the UK emergency calls to deal with IMMEDIATE danger must be reached in under 8 minutes if at all possible.
Plus - we have a very comprehensive Coastguard and Lifeboat service and also Navy Rescue centres in hundreds of locations around the UK - wherever he was - they'd have been close.

You know what cheeses me off? Instead of calling someone up and saying what needs to be said it can take up to 20 minutes just to finish a texting conversation. Texting to me is like saying you don't care enough to talk to me and that's why you're texting. I hate being texted and to text.

It is a lot handier to invite several people to go see a movie, or go to a party, etc via text than by phone. And it also allows you to contact someone you know can't talk right then, but can respond later when they can. Texting has a lot of uses that calling can't accomplish. And yeah, you can leave a message for someone that can't talk, but it's quicker and easier to read a text than to check voicemail.

Well Brian Id have to disagree with all of your statements. Cell phones have group setting for multiple calling people.. If a person cant answer a phone then they cant look or recieve texts messages either. In school and at work if you shouldnt pick up a cvall you shouldnt be reading text messages.. It takes much longer to open a text read it write and respond then it does to hit call back when your free and just call the original sender back and speak answer and hang up...Texting is slower and useless its only good to like send a bit of info if you dont have a pen like a quick number or name

Too bad. No one is worth that.
I've lived for 65 years, killed lots of people in 3 years of combat (Vietnam) and can't think of anyone in my life that I would kill myself for.
At least he didn't take anyone with him.

Everyone has to do those things their way in that situation. Sounds like he planned it out for awhile. Barring a mental illness or severe depression, it really is a selfish act. I have thought about it from time to time in my darkest hours but the aftermath for my parents & kids was more unbearable than my own pain. God bless him.

That picture is of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, not in the U.K., idiots.
a_monkey_with_a_planOct 22nd 2009 3:24PM
I don't think anyone claimed the photo was the actual cliffs, or the actual photo of the cliffs the deceased sent, just some cliffs to illustrate the ... well cliffs angle. idiot. Still thanks for being boring, pointless and rude, 3 for 3.

What a selfish, stupid man! I feel sorry for his family, not for him. He sure as heck did not love his wife or anyone else. He gave no thought at all to how she would feel.
Jimmy DorseyFeb 23rd 2010 3:43PM
Leaping off of a 500 ft cliff would not be my choice if I was contemplating suicide.
What happens if right after you jump you have second thoughts.
darsey66May 10th 2010 5:27PM
Why put it on the rescue workers. How do you know that he didn't wait until he saw them to jump? I've read stories about things like that. If he texted his wife, maybe that was his goal..to have an audience. My brother killed himself..and he for sure didnt let anyone know he was going to do it. I dont see that it was the rescue workers fault. At least they tried.

texting probably didnt have anything to do with not loving his wife or family. he probably
texted so not to take the chance of being talked out of doing it and having to feel the guilt
feelings of hurting the ones you love and have guilt to stop u from ending it. when some
hurt soooo bad, or feel there is no other way to stop the pain, all else has been tried. some have hurt for so long and u just want to stop hurting. everyone gets hurt or as hurt for some reason but when u hurt non stop for so long, it wears u down so low, that u feel thats all that left to stop the constant pain or hurt. it probably isnt the first time it was thought about and stopped for some reason so by texting, u tell someone so it is known, and what happened and not the unknowing that can be worse. some type of closure in a way. u can tell the people who has never been hurt or felt long term pain of some sort.
some can be clueless, stupid, and uncaring.
