Pirated 'Wolverine' Movie Lands Fox News Writer in Hot Water

This week, Fox News columnist Roger Friedman provided lecture fodder for journalistic ethics professors everywhere. When news of a pirated copy of 20th-Century Fox's forthcoming 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' recently surfaced (the movie's set to hit the big screen May 1st), comic fans and interested moviegoers began scouring the Web for an early viewing.
Mr. Friedman not only found and watched the advance copy, he decided it would be a good idea to review it, saying, "It took really less than seconds to start playing it all right onto my computer.'" He was pretty brazen about it, saying also that he found all of the "current top 10 [movies in theaters], plus TV shows, commercials, videos, everything, all streaming away." He went on to say, "I could have downloaded all of it but really, who has the time or the room?"
Rupert Murdoch, the Charles Xavier of Fox (or Magneto depending upon your view) and Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, which is part of the Fox conglomerate, vehemently condemned Friedman's tactics, citing a "zero-tolerance" policy for pirated movies. According to the DeadlineDailyHollywood blog, the News Corporation asked Fox News to take down the "reprehensible" column, which it did, and then, after advising Fox News on how to properly handle the situation, promptly dismissed Friedman, according to early reports on Sunday.
As of last night, however, both Gawker and Huffington Post reported that Friedman still had his job, but that disciplinary action was a possibility. ABC News, which originally also wrote that Friedman had been fired, contacted Friedman directly, who said "there was no action taken against me." [Update: Gawker reports that today Friedman was indeed fired.]

| I'm not sure. |
Perhaps in the future, Friedman will review illegally released movies through a blog, rather than on a Web site owned by the company releasing the film. But then again, maybe he thought it would be alright. We are talking about Rupert Murdoch, after all, who doesn't exactly let accuracy and integrity get in the way of a good story. Facebook Crime and Punishment
Blackmail
Sending any personal info or incriminating pictures to someone on Facebook is a huge mistake for many reasons. One of the worst possible outcomes is getting blackmailed for money, sex, or, well, anything these sickos dream up. Really, whether they're using a fake profile or not, it's a horrible idea. Read up on the story of an 18-year-old who blackmailed 31 male classmates after he posed as a girl and asked for nude pictures. That's lesson enough.
Impostors
Sure, it can be harmless to impersonate a celeb online or create a fake profile for a movie character. But seriously, there's a definite line you shouldn't cross when pretending to be someone else and it can lead to dire consequences for you. Maybe it's not as extreme as the Moroccan man who was jailed for 43 days after creating a fake Facebook profile of a prince, but you never know. Just steer clear of it.
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.
Suicide
Social networking sites has been blamed for a lot of things, fairly and unfairly, but in our opinion, the worst offense has been their indirect involvement in suicides. Obviously, there are a lot of factors responsible in each case, but there does seem to be links between social networking and a rash of suicides, and obviously tehre's the case tragic of Megan Meier, who killed herself after a classmate's mom impersonated a teen boy and harassed her over Myspace.
Murder
We've reported on numerous incidents of people getting in trouble because of their online behavior. Now, people are becoming victims because of what they're doing on the Web too. In England, a man was convicted of murdering his estranged wife after she changed her relationship status to "single." So, be careful of who can see your profile and what you're doing, no matter how harmless it seems.
Nigerian Scammers
Oh, you thought this only happened via poorly worded emails, right? WRONG. Once people got wise to their old ways, these con men are turning to social networking sites for new targets. This time, they're hacking into people's accounts and impersonating them to ask for money, usually with some weird sob story. You can check out a transcript of one of these conversations here.
Cooperation
Even if the law isn't on a case, a victim, his friends, or empathetic strangers might be. Since it's easy to get word out for anything online, people are using blogs, forums, and social networking sites to help track down criminals. In one such case, a vehicle thief was tracked down by a bunch of anonymous car enthusiasts after the victim posted his story on a forum. In the end, they identified the guy through his Facebook profile.
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.

According to the story Murdoch did the right thing. But you rip him anyway? HMMM.. Why? Then you explain how to get around the rules of ethics! HMMM...You call his integrity into question and blatantly display your lack of same!
How come when cnn employees are fired you don't mention what a poor sailor Ted Turner is? HMMM
BobApr 6th 2009 4:10PM
The author of this piece is obviously a liberal who was probably salivating all over his keyboard as he composed this column. Murdoch can't be responsible for the actions of every employee, but the author feels it is so important to implicate him with the movie critic. The critic should have been fired, so Murdoch did the right thing. It's amazing how Liberals will try anything to attack Fox. Probably because all they have are the Three Stooges - Williams, Olberman, and Maddow.
BarryApr 6th 2009 4:15PM
The guy deserved to be fired for being that stupid. That lack of even the most basic amount of common sense is amazing.
JaneyreApr 6th 2009 7:09PM
Ted Turner has retired I think... Hmmm. This guy should have been fired... CNN is better for my taste... FOX Cable is Faux...
robtheblogger6Apr 9th 2009 12:25AM
HE SHOULD BE FIRED just for being a dumbass of actually admitting that he watched the movies in a not so ethical manner.
JasonApr 6th 2009 2:30PM
Of all the loony, kooky, and dishonest antics on the "fair and balanced" network, the one that gets someone fired is a film review.
execk2Apr 6th 2009 2:30PM
Oh come on firing someone because he found something on the net. I watched the movie, looks OK. And yes it takes only seconds. There are a few movie sites on the net. Are the old fuddy-duddies at Fox blind? Or do they know what's out there?
ranjithApr 15th 2009 6:26AM
Yes, In some of the site there will be some pirated movies without any clarity
paulApr 6th 2009 5:09PM
FAUX news is a disgusting propaganda machine...just one of the tools that the GOP/republican party uses on its dumbed down, right wing, low IQ constiuency...thankfully their numbers are shrinking and shrinking fast...with idiots like billo the clown and slant head hannity they are no better than the terrorists they use as their boogie men...Murdoch is a shameless old scum bag.
DdApr 6th 2009 7:37PM
Well Paul, aren't you just the most ill-informed, or the biggest liar, we've seen on these posts. Lying is a typical tactict utilized by liberals, but this conservative is calling you on it!
If anyone simply Googles the cable ratings, Fox News' ratings grew by 24% last month, and they are #1 of all cable stations. CNN was in 15th position. Bill O'Reilly celebrated his 100th month as #1.
danniApr 7th 2009 10:28AM
Hey Paul-
MSNBC wrote the book on the disgusting propaganda machine as well as all the other liberal entities which don't even report the news half the time and the other half it is inaccurate because they have their nose up Obama's ass. Liberals are evil people who trash the right because they can't come up with an intelligent argument regarding most issues. Bush and the right did everything to ruin the economy- really what did Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi do? How about Fannie and Freddie and Harry Reid? How's your Democratic congress and Obama doing now? The left hammered on Bush for his spending but yet Obama has spent more money than the last 5 presidents combined and noone has anything to say about that. Maybe when the depression hits your tunes will change.
I'm sick of liberals saying conservatives are stupid- in fact we are not. We are the ones that go out and earn our money instead of waiting for a big government hand out.
Liberals better recheck their information on propaganda
AlyceannApr 7th 2009 11:28AM
So, then I suppose your spelling ability (constituency) must have gotten you the job of ratings...where are you getting your shrinking
ratings crap, anyway? I am seeing more and more outside venues (airports, bars, etc) showing FOX News all the time.
paulApr 9th 2009 2:18PM
you all are ignoring the facts...FAUX news is losing viewers daily, thats a fact and as far as billo the clown lying as usual, and dd your forgetting meet the press and good morning America at 300+ weeks at number one and gma at 161 further more less than 1% of America is watching that crap anyway, FAUX news is not news, its entertainment and nothing but a propaganda machine and the only people who dont know it are the very idiots that believe, like you all what you see there. Further more FAUX news is the least credible news on the air, thats a fact and proven everyday and by REAL AWARDS GIVEN TO REAL NEWS STATIONS...CNN #1 MOST CREDIBLE...Also, Danni you show your ignorance and your complete and total lack of understanding of how government works by blaming the dems and fanni when the root cause of all the trouble is clearly the deregulation that lays at the feet of three republicans Grahm, leach and Blily but your to ignorant to even know what it is...further more the dems didnt take back the house and senate until the 06 midterms due to what? right wing republican corruption and that is after they held the majoritys for 12 out of the prior 16 years...so your all just the typical right wing dummies regurgitating the lies that the republicans and so called conservatives have spewing since reagan, where all the nations real troubles started but again, your dummies buy into the right wing lies and misinformation and the rewriting of history to support your failed ideology...you all need to get a clue, your party let out the death moan and your rudderless idiots with no fresh ideas just failure, incompetence and corruption...America woke up to the facts and you all are nothing in the rear view mirror...And heres a news flash for you palin like dummies, there is no liberal media, there is the truth and reality then there is the lies and right wing propaganda out of FAUX news...Idiots like you three are exactly why America is in the shape its in, thank God that real Americans now realize that you righties have less than zero credibility.
TaloApr 8th 2009 10:05PM
What? A Conservative network!? Unhappy that there is still so much as a single station not spouting liberal party lemming leading "todays fad buzzword" rhetoric? Get a life.
Former sailorApr 9th 2009 4:45AM
Is Paul still here? I thought I could hear him somewhere, still stumbling around and muttering his propaganda to himself, because nobody with half an ounce of common sense will waste any time listening to him. Somebody should really tuck him in for the night.
PaulApr 6th 2009 2:39PM
wait till it comes out. it is a productioon copy and a few early cgi scenes were not finished., or i hope they will look better in the movie. why did he get fired for turning on his computer and searching, then reviewing a movie, come the F on. btw just search, yeah i never go to the theater, why, when every thing i want to see is up in a matter of days, and sometimes like this movie ahead of time
BillApr 6th 2009 7:24PM
I don't know, maybe because it is ILLEGAL to download and watch pirated material. Just because you can get access to something, that does not make it right for you to accept that access.
He publically confessed to a crime related to his job. He should have been fired.
jkfromcinctyApr 6th 2009 3:03PM
Well, let's just hope that "Fox News" might continue to demonstrate ethical behaviors. "Fox" doesn't have much place to go, except up, in this realm.
RosemaryApr 7th 2009 8:48AM
What on earth makes you say that! I watch Fox and all the others so that I can truley be FAIR and INFORMED and I enjoy FOX the most. Sometimes it is astounding the stories that FOX covers that the other stations IGNORE.
tomApr 7th 2009 10:38AM
What a joke. Can anyone else read the hatred of fox news in this article. Where is the journalistic integrity of Warren Riddle to just report the story without throwing in his bias. AOL you suck and so do your reporters. I doubt you could can come up with a story without including your spiteful jabs.
