Morning Xtra: Free College Education, Clicky Keyboards, Real 'Razor' Phone

Because we can't always cover all the great news in depth, we here at Switched are starting a new AM feature, which recaps other important stories we may not have hit earlier in morning. Welcome to our sixth edition of the Switched Morning Extra.

Free College Education at YouTube!

Well, sort of. YouTube today launched YouTube Edu, an online hub for the various free videos offered by more than 100 colleges and universities around the country. Sure, some of the videos are just informational, but plenty include actual academic content, including lectures, classes, and mini-documentaries (such as the riveting University of Minnesota's 'Science of Watchmen' and Stanford's 'Mobile Phone Orchestra,' above). Academic videos are all the rage, the WSJ points out, with similar site Academic Earth (videos from Harvard, Yale, MIT and others) launching earlier this week. [From Wall St Journal]

Chinese 'Razor' Phone an Actual Razor
Not, that's not a big mic you see on the bottom of this cell phone -- it's a combination electric razor and 2-megapixel camera phone. The phone also fits two-SIM cards, for different phone numbers. Is this the greatest idea since the Blu-ray-player-cum-VHS-VCR? No! [From: ShinyShiny]

Steve Jobs Could Retire This Year
This is just speculation, but Silicon Alley Insider raises the possibility nevertheless, considering the Apple CEO's absence from any of the recent product presentations and his medical leave-of-absence until June, when the new iPhone is rumored to be released. [From: Silicon Alley Insider]

Duh, Many Stars on Twitter Don't Write Their Own Tweets
We have to say it again -- duh. Since when are any celebrities literate enough to write anything, much less the 140-character 'tweets' on Twitter. Well, according to the New York Times, folks such as Lance Armstrong and Shaquille O'Neal actually write their own tweets, whereas Ron Paul, Britney Spears, and 50 Cent use ghostwriters. Check out the Times piece for more background and dish. [From: New York Times]

'80s-era Clicky Keyboards Make a Comeback

First vinyl, now old-school clicky keyboards are all the retro rage. Made by computer pioneers like IBM in the 1980s, these keyboards are stronger, faster and make a more metallic click when you depress keys, making you feel like you're hacking into the Pentagon à la Matthew Broderick in 'Wargames.' No wonder they're so popular with hackers and computer pros, says NPR! If you can't find an old one, Unicomp makes exact replicas of the old IBM keyboards, and DASKeyboard makes a new version based on classic designs. [From: NPR, via Slashdot]
