I THINK FOR THE PRICE THE DELL IS THE BEST FOR ME..
CCMar 27th 2009 5:54PM
GVOSCH,
Before you commit, bear in mind that the Dell Mini 9, aside from the so-so quality and aweful tech support, only comes with up to a 16gig SSD if you buy the Mini 9. The default that is included with the Mini 9 in the price is only 8 gig.
If you want a larger drive you'll have to get the Mini 10 from Dell. That one has a 160gig SATA Drive. Many people say they don't need a large hard drive on a netbook, but that really is a mistake, even for a netbook. Windows and a couple of suites alone will come close to killing half an 8 gig drive. Then you add a virus protection suite and perhaps photos and music. Before you know it the system is locking up and out of storage space!
I have a personal preference for the Lenovo S10, but the Acer Netbooks, the Asus and HP, all are very good alternatives. I realize a netbook is not normally used like a regular notebook, but stuff accumulates on the drive and you really don't want to end up have to upgrade months after having bought a new netbook.
Also before you buy, carefully compare all of the technical specs of these netbooks. Some of them are very easy to upgrade while others are not.
Cheers,
CC

Stay away from anything that has DELL written on it. If the thing breaks, gook luck trying to get it fixed. And trust me it will take a crap on you.
VMar 19th 2009 8:15PM
john,
i agree with you. i will never buy another Dell product directly from them EVER again. i got my husband a tv, and we immediately had problems. they were not easy to work with, and it never got repaired. i have, however, received good Dell products via QVC, and, with QVCs good customer service, i do not worry.

Best bet...wait for second generation just like auto's never buy the first year out of the gate!
darknight815Mar 19th 2009 6:35PM
buy a real laptop or a macbook if your gonna get the 900 price range.
i build and fix computers, and those netbooks are trash.
Every single one of them. You'll say oh but their so cheap and i only surf the web, yeah next thing you know you'll be wishing you had more and could do more.

I have the Dell mini 9. Totally awesome. I dont know why I had to have the webcam and bluetooth but I did.
Great speed. Love the good ole windows XP. Great battery life, anywhere from 3-4 hrs. But if I had to do it again, I would have gone for the mini10. Just a little bit bigger screen and at the same price its worth it.

I Can't Believe They Forgot All About The Lenovo S9 & S10 netbooks!!! It rocks and you can get it on sale at www.lenovo.com for about $350 it also comes in Pink Blue White Red. It kicks the competitions butt!
CCMar 27th 2009 3:27PM
I totally agree with you Linda! This is a great netbook. I bought the Lenovo S10 and I maxed the memory to 2 gigs. Yes, 2 gigs NOT 1 (no hacking required, just a regular install) and I also added the INTERNAL Bluetooth, yes there is actually a socket right on the motherboard for it (again, just open the unit, slap the Bluetooth board in and shut it. Download the drivers directly from Lenovo, you're done), though for some odd reason Lenovo tech support denies it! You can find the instructions and reviews for the internal Bluetooth all over the net easily.
Finally I added a fat (bit ugly) extended life battery and I ended up with a BEAST of a netbook for a total of about $470.00. Granted, I got a nice initial deal through a student discount and a combined coupon! Regardless, the Lenovo S10 is quite a netbook. I am running Office 2007 Ultimate on it and a bunch of other bloated suites with no issues. Can't ask for more!

Given the models you compared, you pretty much hit the mark. It is a shame that you did not get a chance to compare the new ASUS Eee PC 1000HE. This one has the even newer Atom N280 processor (faster 667 FSB), 160gb HD, card reader, 3 USB ports, ethernet, WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth. Standard 1gb RAM can be doubled by the user (takes about 5 minutes) for less than $25. ASUS couples all of this with a crisp display screen that comes with the best warranty against "dead pixels" in the industry.
They are selling like "hot cakes" and Amazon, Tiger PC, Fry's, OnSale.com have all had a waiting list at times. I ordered mine several weeks before the initial release date and have been in love with it from day one. Take a moment to check it out for yourself at http://promos.asus.com/US/Spotlight/Feb2009/1000HE_Story.html. You will not be disappointed.
LarryMar 20th 2009 1:42AM
About the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, I forgot to mention that you get it all for less than $400. It sports a flush fitting battery that gives up to 9.5 hours of service and they even throw in 10gb of free online data storage that you can access anytime from anywhere.
Use the included video camera and microphone system (I use Skype) and it makes you wonder why so many people spend this much for some so called "smart phones."

I just purchased the Dell 9" netbook and i love it! I use it more than the others. It's a very well laid out and the battery last. I paid around $300.00 for it . I have three other Dell computers from 5 years old to 2 and have ZERO problems with them. I do agree their customer service sucks. I just love talking to people in India. (i had to call about a xbox order)
MISTYMOONCHILDMar 27th 2009 11:46AM
i just recieved the mini 10 ordered from QVC- Love! Love! Love! Super Fast, great keyboard, Very impressed. and Fun. Totally impressed. Has auto wifi detector. detected router from upstairs in my home and bam! I was LIVE on thr internet wave! Had small issue - called Dell#/QVC provides 1 year anthing service. Total 150 GB memory. 1 plus 4 GB Ram.

I will NEVER buy another Dell. The laptop I got
was a total loss and they did nothing to help me. They even screwed up the warrenty and took no responsibility for it.
The reputable repair people I went to, NOT Dell, said one out of three or four computers they receive to repair are Dells.
Don't get one.
LimoBarbieMar 27th 2009 11:48AM
I bought an Acer Aspire about 3 weeks ago and I do like it a lot. It's great for travel--smaller than my laptop by about 50% and light at 1.8 pounds--and it is better than my iPhone which has reliability issues--it tends to crash on me at inopportune moments. I dislike typing on the iPhone--but the netbook is no problem. It does have a different feel than my bigger laptop but I am getting used to it! It boots up very fast and it's quick at surfing. No DVD/CD drive but I don't use that anyway and it has 3 USB ports and the touchpad is very sensitive when adjusted correctly.

I am wondering which of these Netbooks is best for running iTunes. I run a small DJ business, and rather than carry CDs around and update those music sets all the time, I just want to go to a system of 2 laptops per DJ system. I would prefer smaller, more portable computers, which is why I'm looking at Netbooks. ANd I can't really go out and spend $1400 a piece on 4 MacBooks right now. I don't need to watch video or do a lot of business related work. I basically need iTunes and that's it (thought it would be nice if I could open Excel and Word docs... but this is not critical). Most Critically, I need to make sure iTunes runs efficiently though. Since we're playing the music at live events, we can't have the songs cutting in and out or freezing up, etc. Any ideas if any of these will meet my needs?
marcludMar 27th 2009 1:16PM
Why do you need 4 at a time?
TimMar 27th 2009 2:33PM
I have 2 DJ systems, want to run 2 computers per DJ system... for cueing up and going back and for between the two, etc...
marcludMar 27th 2009 1:14PM
Once you go MAC you'll never go back. PC's suck arse. PC's running windows suck the biggest arse.
TimMar 27th 2009 2:38PM
Yeah, i get it... but if you read my whole post, you'll see that I specifically said I don't want to spend $1400 per macbook on 4 computers just to basically run iTunes. If I can do it for $300 to $500 per Netbook and still get solid and consistent iTunes performance, then that's a much better option. I prefer Macs. I do own 2 of them. But these computers are for my business, to use iTunes primarily. I can't find any information on how well iTunes will run on these. Anybody tried it?
