Report: Office Depot Employees Altering Computer Price Tags

Wow. Things at Office Depot appear to be worse than we could have possibly thought. In fact, the alleged apparent systematic misleading of customers makes the shenanigans at BestBuy look quite tame by comparison.
Laptop Mag has published a follow up to its initial report of employees being encouraged to lie to customers at Office Depot. It turns out that salespeople at other Office Depot locations across the country are telling Laptop that the the same dishonesty is being encouraged at their stores. Even worse, the lying goes beyond mere fibs about laptop stock -- employees have reported Photoshopping and digitally altering price tags, as well as including the price of extended warranties and protection plans in the cost of clearance items. For example, if a $500 laptop were on sale for $450 and the employees needed to push an $80 extended warranty, the store would list the laptop at $500 and claim to be offering the $80 warranty for only $30.

We'd like to say we're shocked, but it has become increasingly clear that dishonesty and unethical behavior (while not "officially" endorsed) are simply standard corporate policy at some major retail chains. We may not be shocked, but we are certainly appalled.
Check out the read link below for even more tales of dishonesty from one of the biggest office supply outlets in the country. And if you're looking for other stores and companies that have so enraged their customers, take a look at our boycott gallery below. [From: Laptop Mag, Via: Slashdot]

Office Depot isn't the only store pulling this nonsense. I went in to Staples today and found an ink cartridge two pack for my parker roller ball that had been opened and the ink cartridges had been removed, tested (or more) and then put back into the package, taped up, and put back up on the display for sale.
The problem??? I found this identical package, in the same condition, for sale in the cartridge display a month ago and took it to the checker that told them about it...and then today I find it right back where it had been when I found it before.
I'm thinking that I have to cross BOTH Staples and Office Depot off my list...as PERMANENTLY as that ink!!

Ultimately it is the consumers responsibility to verify everything w/ regard to a purchase BUT Office Depot is duplicitous! I learned my lesson when buying a laptop that was a great deal. They advertised it w/ 4 gigs of RAM. When I checked it after I got home it only had 2. Took it back and not even an offer to make it right or "SORRY"! BEWARE when dealing with Office Depot!!!

WOW...what a SHOCK.
I never would have thought that a company, who hires/promotes teenagers who text all day and have terrible customer service attitudes, would EVER resort to such...practices.
Next you will be telling me that Obama went to a Church for 20+ years where the Preacher was...Racist. Then you might say that Obama bought his house with the help of (a) a CONVICTED FELON and (b) Governor "Rob's" wife. If you were really WACKY you would then say that Chicago Politics are CORRUPT to the core and that Obama excelled there.
You guys are "kooky" with all of your facts and truth telling.

Wow, to think California, which is majorly in the red contracts all office supply sales with Office Depot. Wonder if that's why CA is in the red??

The jerk that says "yes we can" is an iliterate who probably can't even pick his own nose. What makes you so sure government officials can't be bribed to say what you want to hear?
And who will you complain to then, your Lord and Savior Obama?
Every company makes mistakes, I suspect Office Depot has not dropped enough dirty money into these people pockets to keep them at bay.
jeffMar 18th 2009 8:25AM
ah, the irony. an 'iliterate' calling others illiterate. and an obama-basher at that.

PC Richards & Son store are run by thieves. An HDTV that is on clearance has a higher price tag in the store than what is advertised on their web site. The sales people also try to get you to pay for installation when you can set up the HDTV yourself. They will try to scam you, especially if you are buying a flat screen tv for the first time.
So do your research.

I was just in Kohl's Department Store in Central PA. I bought a pair of sneakers for my daughter that were marked at $29.95. At the register, when he scanned the tag, or some other hidden tag, the price came up as $34.95. I thought about it for a second, caught myself, and said that I believe they were marked $29.95. Without a single comment, without a sorry, I don't know why that happened, let me check it out, he did something and caused $29.95 to come up. This tells me that, he scanned some other tag, as the same tag scan could not magically cause the correct price to come up. He scanned the correct tag second. It appears as a store policy and not an individual effort to scam the buyer. Be Very Aware in these times, no matter the retailer name or reputed reputation.

How about KMart, Pembroke Pines Mortgage Company, the phone company, every apartment we ever rented, doctors that double bill or call what they give you a second opinion when, all they do is look at the other doctors records, how about dentists who tell you that you need crowns that you don't need, how about sales pyramids like Amway, and there are many. I could go on and on and on and on.... Finally, the truth is coming out, after years and years of great American lies. My husband and I got so disgusted that we moved to Europe. Yes, Europe has problems, but America is the master of stealing. I have looked at both sides now.

Gee, CK, you make a stupid comment based on your dumb political beliefs and then you think you have to explain it? Moron...
KenMar 18th 2009 4:01AM
These coments have certainly stopped me from using office depot,
even though I do compare prices on all my purchases.
However from my experinces all the big retailers will try to rip us consumers off, I have had to put frys, best buy and some others in check, some of them have went out of business
RogerMar 18th 2009 4:05AM
I think this should give Tony Stewart cause to get out of a negative location that is dishonest. Damaging his upstanding reputation with the sort that would doctor prices and such. That is why the comparisons are coming out about the wrong Depots. Guilt by association. Sad at a time like this in our economy.

I stopped shopping with Office Debot last year when I got tired of their bait and switch tactics with their discount coupons which are mailed to their members. Staples treats the customers with considerably more respect, and their stores are cleaner.
stnsmokMar 18th 2009 6:20AM
The article should include Office Max. The managers pull all of these things and more.
ArklightMar 18th 2009 5:41AM
We need another Federal Agency? Bull! We need shoppers who aren't too dumb to tie their own shoes. How people can NOT comparison shop is beyond me. I haven't gone to Office Depot in years, only shopped at Staples one time, and always compare prices and quality before buying stuff. www.madeinusa.com

I have shopped for several years at Office Depot. The only problem I've ever had is when I bought a laptop and the clerk tried to sell my the upgraded warranty. After tthree times refusing, I was able to complete my purchase.
I always check to see if something is a good deal before I buy it, wherever that may be.
