Report: Office Depot Employees Altering Computer Price Tags

Wow. Things at Office Depot appear to be worse than we could have possibly thought. In fact, the alleged apparent systematic misleading of customers makes the shenanigans at BestBuy look quite tame by comparison.
Laptop Mag has published a follow up to its initial report of employees being encouraged to lie to customers at Office Depot. It turns out that salespeople at other Office Depot locations across the country are telling Laptop that the the same dishonesty is being encouraged at their stores. Even worse, the lying goes beyond mere fibs about laptop stock -- employees have reported Photoshopping and digitally altering price tags, as well as including the price of extended warranties and protection plans in the cost of clearance items. For example, if a $500 laptop were on sale for $450 and the employees needed to push an $80 extended warranty, the store would list the laptop at $500 and claim to be offering the $80 warranty for only $30.

We'd like to say we're shocked, but it has become increasingly clear that dishonesty and unethical behavior (while not "officially" endorsed) are simply standard corporate policy at some major retail chains. We may not be shocked, but we are certainly appalled.
Check out the read link below for even more tales of dishonesty from one of the biggest office supply outlets in the country. And if you're looking for other stores and companies that have so enraged their customers, take a look at our boycott gallery below. [From: Laptop Mag, Via: Slashdot]

now let me see if I understood this....
Instead of being asked to pay $530 for a laptop with a warranty
I am actually being lied to and asked to pay $530 for a laptop with a warranty.
And this is a *huge* scandal... is it just me or is it the "new math"??
never mind that the $530 laptop has better specs than the $3000 laptop that I bought 4 years ago.
Retail has a long time honored tradition of raising the price of something so that they can advertise it as being on-sale at a discount.... that's just the way it works... Just like when they take a penny off because studies prove that people don't get the price is the same... you don't have to buy it.

I never shop Office Depot or Staples. These stores sell overpriced junk. Period. No matter how conveniently they are located, stay away. Shop online first. Never buy warranties. It's like auto warranties. They are absolutely useless. Rip-offs.

Those receipts have ink that is only legible for a few weeks. I have had to deal with this problem at Lowe's and Home Depot already, and I had to argue a price at Office Depot- although they allowed me the price on the item. In a time when companies need to support customers many are doing the opposite. Many more companies will fall before this downturn is done.

None bite as much as Circuit city did, I am glad they closed their doors! Bought a laptop through them, found out it had a used hard drive instead of a new one, called Circuit City and they refused to speak to me, tried everything and they did not care. Ended up having to call HP and after a year of getting nothing done but a little work here and there trying to fix it along with lies I finally filed a complaint with BBB and Hp sent me a new computer right away. Thank goodness HP was good enough to make it right at least!

CK I love you sence of humor! Let's see if I can explain to some that you were bein sarcastic, lol Hello, I thought we all did comparitive pricing, oh except for those that really have enough money to just lets say walk in and say just purchase any thing that is marked on the tag without checking to see if it is in the limits or not...... This country is goin to pot, I guess I see why!

Better check your figures before publishing the example of the $500 laptop. Don't you mean to say that the store would list at $530, saying that you would only pay $30 more on the $500 computer, for an $80 warranty?

I agree with the majority regarding Office Depot. There once was a time when I use to shop exclusively at OD. But, up until 2-3 years ago, the store changed alot. The prices became outrageously priced (like the lady said-even pencils) and their stock seemed to diminish in variety. I once bought a particular pen because of the comfort features, and since I wrote an awful lot on a daily basis, I went back to buy refills when the time came. I was told that it wasn't possible because they didn't sell the refills and in fact, couldn't even order them for me. I asked them why they carried these pens if they couldn't or didn't carry the refills. The gal couldn't answer me and told me that they carried a number of items which they were unable to re-order or refill. I've actually started shopping at Staples for the last two years. They're alot nicer and don't walk around with headsets and ignoring you when you actually do need help. Staples also carries alot more items and variety of items whereas Office Depot seems to be cuttung back.

You'd be surprised how much customers don't know about unethical practices at some businesses; some of which they pay top dollar, what I can say is that these companies only want your money, you are not protected in any way, as so many cattle assume. Be very careful about thinking you don't need a cook in the home, and that you want a paycheck and can go out. At home you can make it clean....you have a real dishwasher, not a fake 1 min or less cycle after employees dip the dishes by hand. You don't get a bait and switch at home on the product. The health department should require DISHWASHERS and hot water on all taps. They DON'T, even if you think you are living in a progressive state. You're paying to expose yourself to hazards, and I know they just keep coming and never link their sicknesses to their patronage, because they aren't used to that kind of work, and make a ton of assumptions, all of which are NOT true, and that includes ingredients, where they put a little of the good stuff out and the rest in the back, used everywhere is crap, or bait and switch to lower quality and charge for the same price or more.

If you knew how disgusting some of the places you frequent are, you would never go there again, they're actually dangerous. I'm amazed at the ignorance. Start seeing what's going on in front of you....that person who just did the garbage, whose dying to help you next, they didn't wash their hands, and they just emptied the bathroom one and did who knows what in there first. That thing that looks like a dishwasher, is a sanitizer; it lasts seconds and comes after rushed employees hand dip them as a wash by hand. They are not being properly cleaned and sanitized. Cups and silverware and whatever else is mixed in with every utensil used in the store as a hand wash, and there is no handwasher only, or garbage only, doing this, it's the person staring you right in the face rushing around like a chicken with their head cut off. Those rags they're using to wipe down,,,no one put cleanser in the water, and at that it's not hot, if anyone did it was 5 hours ago, there's other situations to that are incredibly gross and a major health risk.

The solution to this problem is simple. Avoid Office Depot and watch with pleasure as they disappear. Also, avoid rebates from any retailer. It is a sales gimmick and many "rebate proccessing centers" find ways invalidate it. Tell the store to give you the discount up front or just walk away.

I am so glad you wish that 100's of people will lose their jobs. I am happy for you that I have lost my job from Office Depot. I take comfort in knowing that I have made you day. Bite me. ALL store have horror stories, and it seems that it is depot time. As for me I hate best buy, the one in my town just sucks. I keep reading about how bad we were, and we ripped people off. Well my store closed and we had people that came in to say they were sorry to see us go and how much they like shopping at our store. So I guess we aren't all bad. From working in the front of the store I have to say most of the people that have nothing but bad things to say must had throw a fit and yelled at the cashiers and made a jackass out of themselves. Just because you scream at people doesn't make you right.
...Mar 31st 2009 8:04PM
HAHAHAHAHA... the rebates aren't from the store you troll. They are third party companys. Ask for it up front... jesus... thanks for the levity... needed it during this storm... OH NOES!! I hope I don't have to use the plan I was "duped into buying" three years ago when I ASKED FOR IT from BB that just happens to give me a battery replacement, repair or replace if i spill this glass of water on it I almost spilled laughing at you, i get zapped by a power surge, drop it, crack the screen... etc.
oh btw... don't look for OD to "go away" they've shelved a number of LIQUID assets to insure they remain around... at least 1 BILLION

I worked at Staples in Jersey and they did the same thing there - all the time -- and act like they were doing the customer a favor.
ellMar 18th 2009 1:07AM
Face the fact: Dishonest and unethical behavior is not only standard in chain stores. Churches, law enforcement and government agencies often operate the same way crooked corporations do and even worse: Deny and cover up whatever sins and crimes the employees are committing against the people they are supposed to be protecting -- and destroy the victim(s) for squealing in pain.

Hey. Lay off Office Depot. In the market I buy in (South Florida) they have he best prices and there are no problems with the staff. They sell things for the exact price they advertise in their flyers. They are always my first stop. They beat Staples every time.

I worked for a couple of large furniture chains that are now out of business and they were as crooked as you can get when it comes to pricing.
