When Gamers Die, What Happens to Their Online Personas?

There are a few services that will, upon a person's passing, send alerts or e-mails to online factions that are familiar with the deceased. The Deathswitch site, for example, allows people to compose e-mails that will be sent out if the user does not check in at certain customizable intervals (say, every six months). Members pay $20 a year and have the ability to create up to 30 e-mails complete with attachments (such as video files or other media). Slightly Morbid offers the same service, but does not require the member to check in. Information required to log in to the sight is divulged to close friends or family who then have the responsibility of notifying people online if the member dies.
One grief-stricken reality is difficult to cope with. Two is almost unbearable.

My brother was a huge Ultima Online player back in the late 90s. When he tragically passed from a car accident, I contacted everyone he knew via that game and ultimately, his closest friends on his site, was able to utilize everything he gained before I closed the account. They also did have a formal service on the game and a memorial at the site of his house. So even though, I never understand the fascination of playing the online game, I never would forget the impact my brother had with the people he played against and with..

In Second Life, some chick with a game persona named Nori Matahari died last year. Her husband (in game and out) had a group there (the Baths of the Sisterhood Baths) create a memorial thing for her on their group land.

Dear Switched,
I politely request that you remove the image related to this article. It is offensive and rude, hundreds of my ancestor's bodies are buried beneath that headstone, they sacrificed their lives to attempt to free many Scottish families from oppression and slavery (yes, slavery).
I'm sure none of your editors or staff will allow you to use depictions of mass graves from other wars and Culloden should be given the same respect.
Sincerely,
Kate
