11 Quick Fixes for Gadget Disasters

8) Failing Xbox 360
The problem: You want to play some 'GTA 4,' but you get the "Red Ring of Doom."
The fix: First, try the ol' catch-all; turn it off and then back on again. If that doesn't work, try wrapping a towel around your ailing Xbox 360. Once it's covered, turn the console on and let it run for 10 minutes. Turn it off, unwrap the towel, and then turn the power back on. This is not an ultimate solution but should serve to be a temporary remedy, as it hopefully will restore your Xbox for at least a few hours, or possibly even a few days. How could this possibly work, you might ask? Either it's a motherboard/GPU issue and the heating/cool-down resets it, or it's magic.

DO NOT WRAP A TOWEL AROUND A 360!
Now that I have your attention, what that does is melt certain components, which will allow your 360 to run, but also make it a fire hazard. Unless you want your Xbox to burst into flame...

The towel trick IS a temporary and somewhat dangerous fix. When the console gets overheated, the motherboard warps causing it to stop working. The towel trick (3 towels seems to be the magic number) heats the motherboard to a point where it is pliable. Once it's heated, it is best to let it cool upside down, to allow the motherboard to go back to it's original alignment. It works, but again...temporarily and dangerous. Never leave a towel wrapped Xbox unattended. Best course of action when you get the red ring of death is to send it back to Microsoft to let them repair it properly and permanently...as long as it is under warrantee there is only a
minimal charge.
