11 Quick Fixes for Gadget Disasters

5) How to Unfreeze a Frozen Garage Door:
The problem: It's freezing outside and your garage door opener isn't working.
The fix: In cold weather, a garage door opening mechanism will typically harden, which will result in a loss of power. Most garage door openers that were manufactured in the last 15 years will have pressure adjustments with which you can raise and lower the door. To prevent getting stuck in your garage, and poisoning yourself with carbon monoxide, regularly check the settings and adjust them accordingly.

Typically the rubber strip at the bottom of the door sticks where the tire tracks left moisture. Two methods to fix. First, if you can leave your door open a while, hot water poured on the tracks will melt the freeze. Second is a putty knife to separate the door from the car tire track.

And to prevent burning up the motor while trying to unfreeze the door. Unhook the mechanism that connects the door to the motor. Usually a pull rope. Then you can manually raise and lower the door. This works if the power is off, too.

My door recently locked closed. I released the manual release, pulled the rope, raised the door manually, cable/chain is still locked closed. This is a Sears model, about 10 years old. Looks like I am going to have to diassemble unless someone has a fix?

Just be very careful if you mess with the door springs.... they can kill you, literally. Very dangerous. If the door is unhooked, you can mess with the cable/chain using standard safety precautions. Check breakers, wiring and such to be sure it's powered. If it hums, it's got a bind somewhere. Had to realign my guides one time when they sagged.
Good luck.
