Office Depot Managers Encourage Lying to Customers, Say Employees

Some Office Depot sales managers have been encouraging their employees to lie to customers, Laptop's blog revealed in an investigative report Tuesday.
According to a number of the Web site's readers, who also claim to work for Office Depot, the practice of lying in regards to laptop availability is a common at the company due to strict corporate sales quotas. One reader named Rich, who Laptop confirmed to be an Office Depot employee, told the blog, "I have witnessed lying about the availability of a notebook, and have been told to do so myself."
Apparently, Office Depot corporate policy dictates that "attachments" (including warranties and other computer services) must comprise 30-percent of a store's sales. If that quota is not met, a manager faces retribution from his or her boss. Accordingly, if potential laptop buyers express no interest in those additional services, some managers are telling their employees to lie, claiming that available computers are no longer in stock.
It is important to note that this practice is by no means ubiquitous within the company's stores, and that Office Depot, itself, does not explicitly endorse lying. But, that being said, it seems to us that these managers' unethical decisions are reactions to the corporate office's unrealistic expectations. Let's just be glad that there are folks like Rich, and other ethical Office Depot employees, proving that "honest salesman" is not an oxymoron. i think best does the same thing. it seems everything i buy there ,anything that is electronic and expensive i end up having to go back and buy parts for it to work which at times can be a third of the cost of that item, i have stopped doing business with them even after i complained all i got was "so" and that was from the manager who looked like he had just crawled out of a dumpster,

I went to Office Depot to buy some things they had listed on sale and was met with the old "bait & switch" sales tactics. They posted several electronic, computer and office supplies on sale and either didn't have them in stock or said that the items listed on sale was n error. I will never shop there again. I'd rather go to Staples.

There are absolutely better deals to be had elsewhere, but many people still rely on the big-box, brick-and-mortar category stores. My question is why do we still have Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples? Some category stores with just two national competitors have recently seen one of the competitors go under (i.e., Circuit City bowing out leaving Best Buy; and Linens-n-Things bowing out leaving Bed, Bath, and Beyond). Yet we have three national office supply stores that keep operating with better than half their inventory can be purchased far cheaper online or at Target or Wal-Mart.

I think you'll find that most of these stores lie. When shopping for a new flat screen in November at Best Buy, I was told there would be a $250 calibration fee. This is for just setting up color, hues, etc. on the TV. Most people can do that themselves. I guess they figure we are idiots wrapped in morons. No more shopping there for me.

I'll never step into an Office Depot store again. I bought a DVD writer that 1) didn't work after 3 months; and 2) the manufacturer went bancrupt when within the same period. I complained to the Better Busines Bureau. Know what the solution was? They'll sell me another DVD writer at the sale price.
Since then I must have spent more than $5,000 for computers and accessories at Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Circuit City. I'm sure I'm not the only unhappy ex-customer of Office Depot.

I totally agree the prices there are outrageous. I went for a laptop a few months ago saw the prices turned around and left. I found the same laptop over $100 dollars cheaper somewhere else.

Honestly, most places I've worked at encouraged customer deception in one form or another. It's all about the money. All you can hope for is that the individual you encounter on the frontline has enough integrity or compassion to risk being upfront.

Office Depot on 72nd St in Omaha, Nebraska has managers and employees that lie. I was told the computers I wanted were not available and therefore bought 2 computers that were a bit pricier. Then the manager lied about the details of the Service Protection Plan and made it sound like it would fit my needs. However, I later found out the protection plan doesn't cover the first yr except if there is a power surge. Anyway, I confronted the store managers and they refused to refund my money. However, an Executive Customer Relations representive told me my refund would be here within 10 days but it's been over a month and I have not received it. I have been calling and leaving messages with the man who told me this and with his supervisors and no one has called me back for 2 weeks. I encourage everyone to shop elsewhere. Office Depot is a rip off and stole $260 from me.

Its true. They did the same thing to me but at the time I did`nt question it.First they said they had it then after giving me the extended warranty B.S. I declined for and for some reason POOF !! Oh sorry we just sold the last one a minute ago. Now that I saw this story it makes sense.

I had the same thing happen with a digital camera I purchased at Office Depot. Convinced to purchase a protection plan that would cover it "no matter what." I told it was not a display model, then found out after I purchased it that it was indeed and therefore did not work properly. It was a Canon and would not focus properly - ever - from day one. I took it back within 14 days - was told that I would have to use the manufacturer's warranty and the extended warranty only covered it AFTER the manufacturer's ran out (1 yr.) I sent it back to the manufacturer for repairs - 8 weeks later - finally got it back. Still didn't work to my specifications. Waited out the year, tried to use the extended warranty only to be told that my particular problem with it wouldn't be covered. So I trashed the thing, wrote an ugly letter to Canon and Office Depot and bought a Digital SLR from Wolf Camera. I will never purchase another electronic item from Office Depot.

I use to work for another office supply company this was common practice. They want you to buy all those extras because that is where they make their money. Companies make very little profit from the sales of the computer or laptop, in most cases it's even a loss for them.
Customers need to educate themselves on how these business make money, then you can make better choices on how to spend their money.

This is not news about OD. They have been taking advantage of customers for years, especially with their "bundle packages" and extended warranty programs. About time they got busted.

Some time ago, I heard that Office Depot had to close some of its stores.
After this incident, I expect to see a LOT of Office Depot store closings!

Buy the laptops, monitors, or whatev online over their website with free shipping - two days. Same great deals week to week. But you would already know this if you shopped there more than once.
