New Philips LED Light Bulb Lasts for 45,000 hours

Philips has been hitting us with some out-there lighting concepts lately, but the company's Master LED light bulb is actually already on sale in Europe and is set to brighten up Stateside lives around July. The 40W-equivalent bulbs should run between $50 and $70, and expected lifetime is set at 45,000 hours -- just slightly more than a CFL's 10,000 or a standard bulb's 750 hours. The Master is certainly a damn sight nicer looking than the other mutant LED bulbs we've seen, but we'll see if consumers are ready to jump on another more-expensive-upfront lighting tech so soon after CFLs have hit the mainstream. Is 45,000 really "just slightly more" than 10,000 or 750? What is your definition of "slightly"?

For home use, the price is still very high. For commercial uses, where replacement costs include labor, and where power costs are generally higher, this is an investment that will quickly pay for itself. LEDs use less than half the power of CFL's, can be dimmed, emit even less heat, contain no mercury, and last for decades.

Still, the Cree LR6 remains the best, most cost-effective replacement I've seen yet. I just don't use enough 40 watt bulbs to seriously consider this one. Now, if they make it in a 100 watt equivalent, we can talk.

I can comprehend that the LED chip itself can last 45,000 hrs. How about the components inside the bulb? Do they offer a 45,000 hrs life span? I have doubts on that.

45,000 hours translates to roughly 5.1 years of continuous light. pretty impressive considering it doesnt overheat.

I have lots of LED bulbs. I have had one in my apartmrnt communal lift for a year now. it goes on and off probably 100 times a day...no drama at all. this is the future folks! It only uses 7 watts as well...
