Are These Newspapers Going Out of Business?

| I prefer printed newspapers. | |
|---|---|
| I prefer the Web. | |
| I'm not sure. |
24/7 Wall St.'s team of analysts found that papers like the Philadelphia Daily News, the Detroit News, and the Chicago Sun-Times will almost certainly fold due to larger local papers (e.g., the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Detroit Free Press, and the Chicago Tribune) that have a firmer grip on an ever-dwindling market share. But major publications will not be spared, either, according to the report; analysts say that, come summertime, it's likely the San Francisco Chronicle, Northern California's largest newspaper, will only be available online. Newspapers in the Twin Cities, though, are beholding the bleakest future; the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press will have to try and outlast each other in what Time calls a "grim race."
We can only hope that, during these trying times, these papers will manage to stay afloat in online form, and that all of those writers and editors will be able to find refuge in the blogosphere. As is always the case with those facing potential layoffs, our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Death of Print
Elle Girl
In April 2006, Elle Girl's print edition was closed down, but the Web site lives on at ellegirl.com.
CosmoGirl
Though it will be folded into Seventeen magazine, the teen version of Cosmopolitan will publish its last print issue in December 2008. It will live on at CosmoGirl.com.
Christian Science Monitor
Founded in 1908 by Mary Baker Eddy, this venerable paper will move all its daily content to the Web starting in 2009, though it will still publish a weekly print version.
Radar Magazine
Was it too snarky for its own good? We'll never know, but this modern-day successor to '80s-era Spy magazine shut down in October. AMI, owner of the National Enquirer, bought RadarOnline.com, however, which will focus on celebrity gossip a la TMZ.com.
US News and World Report
Once a serious competitor to Time and Newsweek, US News and World Report is now best known for its College guides, which it will continue to publish. The weekly newsmagazine, however, will be turned into a monthly, and all daily operations are moving to the Web at usnews.com.

tom edmonds so right.....papers so liberal. I rather get my news from my sources (sites)
Willy CMar 10th 2009 6:25PM
Fox news is the only trustworthy news. The rest are KRAP! Just like Obama,Pelosi ,Reid and Barney the twinky Franks.
SamMar 10th 2009 6:38PM
I remember and it was not to long ago, the papers were watchdogs for the people, they stood for things that were important, let us know what is going on in the world as well our own community. They took on conservatives and liberals alike without bias and were an important voice for those who could now speak for themselves. I think that we failed the newspapers because we allowed the idealogs and mega corpoations to dictate what we see on television and read in the papers.

All you idots who think newspapers are "liberal" and that is the reason why newspapers are failing have your heads up your collective asses. Newspapers fail because they don't generate enough ADVERTISING DOLLARS, pure and simple. As more "news" moves to the internet and TV, that is the natural flow of advertising dollars.
There are plenty of "conservative" newspapers that are failing too. Of course, they may be failing since "conservatives" as a group can't or won't read and would rather be fed their opinions by the likes of Rush Limpdick while they drive around..

Amen Tom, your right on the money. The sad thing is that Liberal media has their hold on the internet too. Too bad the spoiled people of this country are too ignorant to see through the smoke and mirrors.
RonMar 10th 2009 6:38PM
Tom,
You are an idiot

The Left-Right, Liberal-Conservative, split has nothing to do with the decline of newspapers. It's the economy and the age of the Internet -- the same thing that has affected radio and TV, as well. And anyone who is happy about that is short-sighted at best.

I prefer getting my news at the bginning of the day from a news paper. In the evening I can go to the web to see areicles, oftern the full story, and make my self 'heard' by giving an instant response. This is not to say that I will not write to the edito.
Many papers are leftist, many Liberal, some Conservative, and some definitely Reactionary. I am a conservative (moderate). The major networks tend to be liberal and are obviously so. Most conservative media tries to be fair. Can't say the same for anyone else.
Just support printed news. If the power goes out how will you know what is going on. And did you ever try toput a computer on the floor of your birdcage or wrap a fish?
EdvardMar 11th 2009 11:21AM
Any suggestions on what we can use to line the bird cage?

Pelosi,Murtha and Obama wanted the US troops in Iraq to fail and surrender. They even tried to withold funding of the US troops in Iraq therefore endangering the safety and lives of our YOUNG and BRAVE soldiers. Obama said the surge in Iraq will not work and he was wrong. Obama is now sending a SURGE in Afghanistan. These 3 democrats SHOULD BE TRIED FOR TREASON AND THEN EXECUTED BY A FIRING SQUAD OF THE US MILITARY.

Right on...again, Tom

News Papers are failing because of The Liberal Media, and bias within the owners, publishers and editors of the News Papers. I wished I purchase one of the failing papers so I could fire the staff and reopen as a real news paper, not a paper of opp ions.

I have delivered the CHICAGO TRIBUNE and the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. I read each newspaper carefully for the different points of view from their individual columnists to the opinions of their editorials. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is and has always printed the Republican point of view, while the CHICAGO Sun-Times has been the voice of the democrats. However, the newspapers, have become irreverent due to technology, the internet, TV, and greedy owners like the jailed Conrad Black. But the newspapers are beginning to look alike, have the same headlines, and stories, even though the Sun-Times is 50 cents while the CHICAGO TRIBUNE is 75 cents. Even a loyal reader like me sometimes wonder what is the difference is in the newspapers except for the price.

THANK GOD NEWSPAPERS WILL BE GONE. They only serve the liberal rejects of this country. Completely unfair in their reporting, they deserve termination.

One other thought: I DO miss news reporting. Now I have todeal with "slant on the news", "news as ________ sees it, etc. Journalism schools need to go back to the basics I was taugh when I did some ofthis work. "Who - What - When - Where - and only Why when it was the view point of those involved in the news item. But journalism schools are only found in the ivory towers of academe.....
wallyMar 10th 2009 10:48PM
Don't you all ever get tired of that partisan bulls**t? Why can't we worry about what's happening with the economy, and try to figure out how to deal with it, rather than manufacturing blame on one party or the other? A pox on both your houses!
Think of all the energy that is wasted everyday fuming about the partisan philosophy that is different from yours.

It's unfortunate people bash journalists and newspapers, the foundation of free press in America. Who will report on local news? A blogger? Who will provide indepth coverage of local sports? A blogger? Who will photograph life's most precious moments? A blogger?
Think about it people. Regardless of the polical slant of any newspaper, they pay people to write and investigate stories that affect our lives. They create a basis for 'thought'. Without them, we lose any sense of fact, any sense of accountability, any sense of pure journalism.
We MUST not let our newspapers die.
DOnMar 10th 2009 7:58PM
Newspapers have been commiting suicide ever since they became overloaded with Communists and Marxists. Readers finally decided not to keep subsidizing leftest propaganda and distorted and biased news. The only place an American can find honest news reporting is on Fox news or the inter-net.
