Study: 'World of Warcraft' as Addictive as Cocaine

According to a Swedish youth organization study, 'World of Warcraft' is the most addictive game on the planet. Which is cool if you're a gamer and immune to such things, but decidedly less cool if you're an addict who hasn't gotten out of your comfy lounge chair with your laptop balanced precariously on your stomach and pizza delivery boys routinely making sure you don't die of starvation for the past 18 months.

The Youth Care Foundation called the game "the cocaine of the computer games world." We should point out that's actually a step down on the hard drugs ladder, as the game is commonly referred to was World of Warcrack. The study, which has yet to be published, is based on interviews with parents and gamers who've contacted the foundation.
An employee at the foundation noted that they have not dealt with a single case of game addiction in which WoW wasn't involved. Founded in 1991, the foundation deals with all sorts of addiction; in 2007, 170 of the 2,000 calls it received concerned video or computer games.
If you'll excuse us, we're going to get back to playing WoW now, if that's okay. [From: The Local]

Oh Please. Wow is no more addicting than any fun game or sport. I'm 47, I've played Wow since its inception. Sometimes I play intensively for a few months, then I turn away from it completely for a lengthy time.
Addictive personalities will attach themselves to anythying that gives them the high they seek, be it a drug, a game, food, a TV show, whatever.

I'm Matt and i've been playing WOW for 1 1/2 years.
@ first i didnt prefer to play alot but as i kept lvling i grew more and more addicted to it. I guess it was the sense of accomplishment i get when i play.
my parents are very strict and expect me to STRAIGHT A's. of course i dont but i keep a high GPA, but b/c they want me to become an over-achiever and since i can't. i feel as if they are never proud of wut ive done and how hard i have tried to please them.
i found WOW to be an escape to my stress-filled school work.
it can break you if u dont limit yourself, BUT that shouldnt b a problem since WOW has a parental control that can set times to kick u off. i understand that some parents aren't aware of it but u should get familiar w/ the settings of the game b4 u throw ur $ @ it.

This article is just another one in a long line of articles that have heard a rumor from the status quo that *insert today's hottest mmorpg here* is addictive. This isn't news, it's not even truth.
I play WoW occasionally, but I used to play it a lot more often - in the realm of 10-14 hours a day. I did the same thing with Diablo II, and before that I spent the same amount of time in chat rooms online.
Ever wonder why people never say "Gosh, that Final Fantasy VII is really addictive?" They don't say it, because it's not. It's one of the most played and celebrated RPGs of all time, but it is not addictive. It's missing one crucial thing that all the other "addictive" ones have in common.
Playing online.. with your friends.
Why is it the first thing that haters always like to spew is how people lock themselves in their basement to play WoW and lost all their friends and have no social life and will have no social skills, blah blah blah. Social interaction is what makes these games what they are. I would love to see any one of you haters try to coordinate just one weeks worth of raids for 24 other people, and then come in here and spew more of your "gamers are antisocial and have no life or friends" bs. None of you even think before you speak.
Sorry, this hypocrisy has been bugging me for a while now.

Frankly,
World of Warcrack is boring, and gets old real quick.
The only thing about it is, its an escape from your life.
If your life sucks, play Warcraft.
Frankly, I don't blame a lot of people. Life sure is unsatisfying sometimes.
I quit years ago though.

Any RP is addictive, whether it's a video RPG, or a MUCK, or a private RP between 2 or 3 fans. Anyone who has RP'd can tell you that. It is not, however, a bad thing, unless players start to confuse their roles with RL, which I've seen happen. Most people, though, manage just fine.

Has anyone bothered to check out real and alarming addictions like drugs? Is being addicted to video games worst than being addicted to drugs? I'd rather be addicted to games than to drugs and most parents would agree to that. I've also read an article http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=1421576 which pointed a good effect of games in real world specially in times of crisis.

I couldn't get myself addicted to this I played at least 6/10th if not 4/10ths of this game on a trial bases back in 2006. I like the fact that the game can be played casually or play with others at your own time. and not forced to play with others. The game is far from cheap when you add up the price of the game itself being $19.99 or $20.00, The Burning Crusade costs $29.99 or $30.00 and The Wraith of The Lich King for $39.99 or $40.00 for a total of $89.87 or $90.00.
or
World of Warcraft Battle Chest $39.99 or $40.00 and Wrath Of The Lich King 39.99 or $40.00 for a total of $79.98 or $80.00
Add in the monthly fees and their upcoming 39.99 expansion pack it will be too high for me to even get started to get addicted to that expensive thing.

It is true that online games like wow Lineage are really addictive because people that cannot socialize like geeks and others feel powerful and make friends , like living in their own world, there should be a Narconon like rehab center for wow addicts.
