Traditionalists might balk, but the holiday shopping season is already underway. Skeptical? Head to your local department store and you'll be inundated by Christmas trees and ornaments. Bargain hunters, though, know that the real deals are more than a month away.
Black Friday, traditionally, is when retailers truly slash prices. Early birds can save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars off of their holiday bills. Switched.com checked with a few elves, who gave a sneak peek at what you can expect deal-wise this year.
Blu-ray Players and Movies: Blu-ray is shaping up to be the biggest door buster of this year's Black Friday. de Grandpre expects at least one retailer will offer a Blu-ray player for just $49. Look for bargains on Blu-ray films as well, with last year's hit titles (such as "Iron Man") to fall as low as $5.
Laptops: With the proliferation of Netbooks this year, it's never been easier to find affordable portable computing, but Dan de Grandpre, CEO of DealNews.com says it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. Look for well-equipped Netbooks to sell for $199 – and basic 15" laptops to go for as little as $249.
HDTVs (Pretty big): The holidays are typically the best time to buy a new TV – and Black Friday is the time to do it. If you're looking for a normal sized set, you're in luck. Piper Jaffrey analyst Mitch Kaiser says he expects to see 32-inch LCD sets for as low as $299. GottaDeal.com is estimating 37-inch plasma and LCD sets will fall to $399 or less.
HDTVs (Really big): Need something bigger? How about a 46-47 inch LCD set for $599 – a 25 percent savings? Or a 52-inch LCD for $999? Dealnews says you can expect both. Plasma deals will be a little harder to come by, but a 50-inch set should run roughly $899.
HD Camcorders: You've wanted to shoot your child's school play in HD for a while, but haven't been able to spring for the pricey camcorder. This might be the year. Low-end, flash-based 720p models could drop as low as $60 (though you won't be able to zoom with those). Expect a high quality 1080p HD camcorder for $349.
GPS: While navigation systems have dramatically expanded their reach this year – even making it onto the iPhone – there's still a market for car-based systems. Dealnews predicts you'll be able to find a no-name entry-level system for $49, while a Garmin or Tom-Tom brand will be as low as $69.
Digital Picture Frames: Showcasing your digital pictures consistently gets cheaper. This year, skip the 7-inch screens and focus on the 8- or 9-inch ones, which should be available on Black Friday for as little as $30.
Monitors: Computer monitors might not be the sexiest of gifts, but they're usually welcomed with open arms – and they'll be cheap this year. Name brand 22-inch LCD models may go for as low as $99, while 24-inch models will drop below $150.
Memory: Don't know anyone who needs a monitor? External hard drives are always popular, since they're an easy way to back-up data. Dealnews expects a 1TB drive to fall as low as $49 this year. Gottadeal is looking for 8GB flash drives to hit $15.

Is it me or is it increasingly apparent that SWITCHED hates facebook. Every other day its a facebook bashing article.
And if that's not bad enough - 3/4 of the sites in the article are JUST LIKE FACEBOOK - social networking for niche groups.
Get over it Switched - just because something popular doesn't mean you are too good for it.

I completely agree and was about to write a comment saying the same thing.

I agree - first they say it is for old folks - thanks Switched for feeding into ageism - NICE one - are your writers all still in high school.
Also, I am very pleased with facebook. It is where a have reconnected with friends. Other sites have promised to do friend searches but little came up. My family is on it, their friends, my friends, many with DIFFERENT interests.
I really am disgusted at Switched's attitude.

Tagged.com is the best site. It has many options that is not available on other sites. The women on there are plentiful and beautiful!

I am suggesting Winster. You can make friends (and enemies) and play at the same time. The object is to get high points while helping others and them helping you. Its a lot of fun especially when you get to redeem prizes...

I just opened Facebook account to answer my family requests but closed it months later when they changed they TOS, saying they own and keep for years your personal information including pictures etc. Scary shit, so it's not for me and it's not for people who have signed a contract of being an exclusive artist. I have friends who have been seen in Facebook and have problems with their managers. Weird people have contacted me from facebook so I had to turn off the search engine option there. But the most scary part is where they say I OWN YOUR DIGITAL INFORMATION AND WOULD USE IT THE WAY I WANT .... not for me...

Facebook is great for catching up with high school and college friends, but these sites are really cool. Joining a group on facebook isn't always enough immersion into the specific niche people want to be in. Outdoorzy, Bakespace, and Dogster all seem to have a nice following going.

I have Facebook and Myspace for different reasons. Facebook for
finding and catching up with old friends. And Myspace for
staying up to date with all my favorite punk bands and skateboarding.
But I'm also a model railroad geek. I wish there was a same type of website set up for that.

Is there a one-page list of these somewhere? It's annoying to click 20 times to read something.

It's obvious that you don't like Facebook. And your incessant bashing is only helping to gain notoriety. It has considerably more controls and safeguards than the other sites.
I suppose, MySpace with all of the pedophiles and stalkers is a much better choice?
Christine Whitney, if you doubt it, contact me and I'll give you the stats.
PS, I check into these web sites for a living as part of my duties.

Has anyone else heard about the facebook worm virus? It was on AOL with a video explaining how it can totally trash your computer. I have stopped going on facebook since I saw this video, has anyone else heard anything like this?

Y not give all the details? Does it sound scarier if you leave out critical details about the Worm?
Storm Worm Virus Warning from the FBI-Truth!
Summary of the eRumor:
An alert from the FBI that says there is a version of the Storm Worm virus circulating that falsely leads you to believe that the email about it is about the FBI and FaceBook.
The Truth:
The warning from the FBI is true as is the Storm virus. This began circulating in July, 2008.
The FBI alert says that you may receive an email that talks about the FBI and the popular social networking site FaceBook. The email may have the phrase "F.B.I. vs. facebook."
The email asks you to click a link to learn more about the FBI and FaceBook---but if you do, your computer becomes infected with the Storm Worm virus. The virus does not destroy your computer but does link it as part of a massive network of computers on the Internet that are then used for sending spam, spyware, or harvesting information from computers such as email addresses or financial information.
