That's one of our protections under the First Amendment, and the same amendment that protects journalists, law-abiding pornographers, photographers, etc. The moment the police are allowed to freely intercept otherwise-thought-private conversations online, will be the moment we can all say goodbye to our freedoms, and subsequently our safety as we know it. This will open the door to all sorts of police and government corruption that we certainly do not need. In fact, I'd much prefer crime over the police and governments compromising our privacy. They don't have a first amendment although I myself am all for privacy. The government has too much power over its citizens sometimes. Then again it is hard to argue exactly when it is too much. I mean if they catch criminals that is good but if they listen in on conversations with no evidence and just suspicion I would say that is going a bit too far. It is a complicated issue.

Richard
