Massachusetts Teens Face "Sexting" Charges

Six Massachusetts teens may face child pornography charges after being caught "sexting," according to CNN. The boys, ages 12 to 14, got into trouble after one of them took semi-nude pictures of his 13-year-old girlfriend and sent them to the others.
The parents of the boys admit that the teens used poor judgment, but insist that charges of child pornography would be excessively harsh. This is a delicate situation, to say the least. The boys involved are young, so does their age preclude them from being prosecuted? Did they actually commit a criminal act? Is this a case of technology turning six curious kids into knowing pornographers? Either way, "sexting" is emerging as an urgent new topic of discussion for parents and their children, as you'll see from the previous cases below.
May we suggest that discussion happens ASAP. [From: CNN]

Fifty years ago this was called 'playing doctor' up to about age 12, and simply being a teen after that.
We're criminalizing being a kid. It seems like we're criminalizing daily life.

I agree that the kids should be punished in some way, but I'm not so sure about the above charges. They do need to be punished to learn a lesson. This is the reason why kids shouldn't have cellphones at school. Kids are kids and they are going to do dumb things which is why cell phones should be banned from school grounds. Besides, all their friends are at the school with them, so why do they need cell phones to contact eachother?

was that the spirit of the law? of course not. nonsense like this is why respect for the law has eroded to nil. so, if a 13 y/o takes pics of himself and sends it to others- is he 'molesting' himself? what an insult to justice.
