Make Time Lapse Movies on Your iPhone
We stumbled across TimeLapse, a new iPhone app, on TUAW last week, but it's cool enough that we've got to share. The $0.99 download lets you set up your iPhone to take snapshots at regular intervals -- no need to hang around and constantly mash the shutter button -- which means you've got cheap a way to make simple stop-motion movies.
We've played around with a lot of stop motion software with both point-and-shoot digital cameras and dSLRs, and it's rarely a simple process. The software solutions out there are often clunky and difficult to use, and it's always a crapshoot as to whether your camera is actually supported. Granted, the iPhone camera leaves a lot to be desired in terms of picture quality and clarity, but the iPhone/TimeLapse combo frees you from having to lug your computer around in order to make time-lapse movies.
You can set the app to take pictures as often as every 10 seconds (set up the camera facing a thunderstorm approaching on the horizon for an interesting mini-movie) or only once every 24 hours (if there is a construction site viewable from your window, you could set the phone to take a snapshot once a day). Check out Urlesque for some other great stop-motion movie ideas. Once you're satisfied with your set of images -- you can take up to 300 -- download the pictures to your computer and import them into iMovie, QuickTime Pro, or your favorite movie making application. Most editing apps should support stills, so you'll want to set each photo as an individual frame in your movie.
Here's a direct link to TimeLapse on the AppStore. The only problem? Tearing ourselves away from our phones long enough to record a stop-motion movie. [From TUAW]

Yeah, the iPhone camera (or any other cell phone camera) may not be the greatest, but that does a pretty good job nonetheless. I know from experience, time lapse stuff is a lot more difficult to do well than you would think.
