10 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer Now

5. Use lighter weight apps
One of the most often overlooked ways to speed up your PC is to simply use different applications. Switched-endorsed applications like VLC Media Player, Foxit, and Abiword can easily replace Windows Media Player, Adobe Reader, and Microsoft Word, respectively, while requiring only a fraction of the computing power (they're also free!).

Another FREE Office software is OpenOffice.org - this is open source code software that is free for any use (private or commercial), developed in part by Sun Microsystems. Check out the website - www.openoffice.org - there are even some things that MS doesn't have as part of their office package (ability to create a pdf of a file with the single click, etc). It may not be quite as robust in other areas as MS yet, but for the average user, will do just fine. Also, it will open and save to any MS office file format.
