Couple Arrested for Eating Rare Iguana...on Facebook

People are weird.
The latest oddball story concerns an American couple's meal of an endangered iguana that landed them in Bahamian jail. Like so, so many other idiots, they were caught after the country's officials saw pictures of the feast on Facebook.
The couple -- Vanessa Starr Palm, 23, from Illinois and Alexander Daniel Rust, 24, from Indiana -- posted incriminating snapshots that included "the suspects catching an iguana, parts of an iguana on a grill, two men eating the iguana pieces, and a man and a woman cleaning what appears to be undersized conch," according to police. It's unclear exactly how it got to the police, but apparently many people reported it.
Palm and Rust have been charged with violating an animal protection act and were released on $500 bail each. They'll be back in court next Tuesday. As if that wasn't enough, a Bahamian official said the pair "could also be charged under U.S. law which makes it illegal to commit an offence in a country that has a relationship with the U.S." Good.
While we usually stick to tech, we'll impart some travel advice in this case: stick to the buffet. [From: The Chicago Tribune]
The iguanas are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Florida.
Note to self: Stop eating so many iguanas. [From: Metro.co.uk]
Facebook Crime and Punishment
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.
Blackmail
Sending any personal info or incriminating pictures to someone on Facebook is a huge mistake for many reasons. One of the worst possible outcomes is getting blackmailed for money, sex, or, well, anything these sickos dream up. Really, whether they're using a fake profile or not, it's a horrible idea. Read up on the story of an 18-year-old who blackmailed 31 male classmates after he posed as a girl and asked for nude pictures. That's lesson enough.
Impostors
Sure, it can be harmless to impersonate a celeb online or create a fake profile for a movie character. But seriously, there's a definite line you shouldn't cross when pretending to be someone else and it can lead to dire consequences for you. Maybe it's not as extreme as the Moroccan man who was jailed for 43 days after creating a fake Facebook profile of a prince, but you never know. Just steer clear of it.
Self-Incrimination
Do we really have to explain this? Just look up the shoplifter who posed with her stolen merchandise, the many photos of drunk underage teens, and, most recently, the album featuring a couple who killed and ate an endangered iguana in the Bahamas.
Suicide
Social networking sites has been blamed for a lot of things, fairly and unfairly, but in our opinion, the worst offense has been their indirect involvement in suicides. Obviously, there are a lot of factors responsible in each case, but there does seem to be links between social networking and a rash of suicides, and obviously tehre's the case tragic of Megan Meier, who killed herself after a classmate's mom impersonated a teen boy and harassed her over Myspace.
Nigerian Scammers
Oh, you thought this only happened via poorly worded emails, right? WRONG. Once people got wise to their old ways, these con men are turning to social networking sites for new targets. This time, they're hacking into people's accounts and impersonating them to ask for money, usually with some weird sob story. You can check out a transcript of one of these conversations here.
Cooperation
Even if the law isn't on a case, a victim, his friends, or empathetic strangers might be. Since it's easy to get word out for anything online, people are using blogs, forums, and social networking sites to help track down criminals. In one such case, a vehicle thief was tracked down by a bunch of anonymous car enthusiasts after the victim posted his story on a forum. In the end, they identified the guy through his Facebook profile.
Murder
We've reported on numerous incidents of people getting in trouble because of their online behavior. Now, people are becoming victims because of what they're doing on the Web too. In England, a man was convicted of murdering his estranged wife after she changed her relationship status to "single." So, be careful of who can see your profile and what you're doing, no matter how harmless it seems.

Hey if it a animal not a cat or a dog, and it tastes good,, eat it,, its so ugly your doing it a favor, what possible benefit can a iguana ever be to humanity, besides pets or food
DawnAug 15th 2009 6:47PM
Are you serious? Should we put you,I mean what good are you to humanity, not much I'm sure

Ignorance of a law is NOT a defense. If you vacation in another country, you'd better know the rules of that land. If you don't look into the laws, and wonder if something you want to do, or eat, might be illegal, simply don't do it! Stupid kids! I'm glad they got caught!
chuckFeb 16th 2009 5:22PM
Eating exotic food is part of a travel and educational experience. I'm sure they didn't know it was an endangered type as opposed to a common type of animal. God gave humans dominion over animals and that includes eating them! They will probably be invited to be on Survivor next year! SO get yourself jealous now, kids!!!

StephanieFeb 16th 2009 5:31PM
It said they're in a Bahamian jail. Doesn't that mean they're in the Bahamas? If so, why are they so worried about someone killing a stupid lizard when the man that murdered a teenager from the US is still free? Where are our priorities?

When I was stationed in the Republic de Panama Canal Zone, Panama had a hunting season for Iguanas. At the time I never thought anything about it. Now I think about, it is a Reptile just like Bullfrog. And here in the U.S. people do hunt {gig} bullfrogs for the Frog Legs, which are very delicious when fried and does taste like chicken,so one would assume that perhaps Iguanas also probably taste like chicken. But They are on the endangered species list and are against the law to kill , hurt injure in any way. Pet Shops sell them as Pets,so it would be the same disgusting sorta thing to do if someone was eating their cats & dogs. Eww ! Gross !
Stupid Koreans eat Dogs and the Chinese eat Cats ! How Sick and Disgusting Is That ?

She should have aborted her baby on You Tube instead. Then she would not have been charged with anything illegal.
TomFeb 16th 2009 5:43PM
If that was an Allen's cay Iguana that is only found in the Bahamas then they did truely eat an endangered species. Bahamians are probably tired of being stepped on by Americans.
lisaFeb 16th 2009 6:02PM
eating an endangered species? these people are disgusting i hope they go to jail for along long time and running it on you tube? i hope they get poisioned. disgusting human garbage
BethFeb 16th 2009 5:43PM
I hope they get locked up in jail for years!!! Disgusting filthy and trifling...I hope my friend's at PETA are on this story.
All you people who think it's so cool to have exotic animals as pets are killing not only your pets by the illnesses they get because you have taken them out of their nature habitat and vegatation and insects they eat for their survival that are found in their natural habitat. Especially you people who have exotic birds. God gave birds wings for a reason, so that they can fly and be free. Shame on anyone who buys an exotic bird and locks the animal up in a cage!!! Maybe all of you people who have exotic animals should be taken from the USA and taken to Cuba where the suspected terrorists are being held. Locked up like slime and be given food you aren't use to eating and see how you fare..SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!! That is why this planet is dying. Human's are taking animals/plants etc from where God meant for them to be. You people are messing with the flow of Mother Nature and are killing Mother Earth!!! Go out into nature away from noise and listen to her cries.
lisaFeb 16th 2009 7:47PM
Thank you Beth Beautifully said!!! I agree I pray that the Bahamian government l;ocks these two up for a few years at least to teach them a lesson and what were they doing making a video out of it like a snuff film? I hope they poison themselves and leave this planet because they are disgusting low lifes who dont deserve to live on this precious planet!!! Thats how angry I am!
BethFeb 16th 2009 9:41PM
Lisa,
Thank You so much for replying to my comment as far as your comment goes you took the words right out of my mouth!! ^5 to you
I too, like you were sickened. I researched the Bahamian Gov. on these types of matters and trust me these individuals will be taken care of. I am a proud member of PETA and an animal activist. I also contacted my local representive ( PETA ) and an "all out war" on these people will be waged.
Bless you Lisa and everyone else who is a lover of ALL animals domesticated and wild!! Please people do not buy exotic animals, including birds for pets. God gave birds wings to fly and be free, not put into cages. Birds help pollunate our planet. Taking these animals out of their natural habitat is what is costing not only you people high vet bills when they become ill because being taken from their natural habitats where their natural food is located is why your exotic pets get ill and die. This is also not only killing these animals but also disturbing nature, the plant life and killing off these precious animals which in turn is killing these animals habitats, hense, The Rain Forest, and also killing the Earth. Go out into nature far away from the noise of us humans and I promise you, you will hear Mother Earth cry because we as humans are killing her and her creatures and plants. Every single species and plant life has a unique purpose.
DawnAug 15th 2009 7:19PM
Actually, this planet is dying from all the chemical pollution, not from having captive exotics. You should do some research on your beloved Peta, they would rather kill an animal to keep it from being a pet. They don't want anyone to have pets, including dogs and cats.If you want a worthy fight, fight for animals rights to real food, instead of processed dog food. All it does is make a fortune for manufacturers and vets.Although I agree with you a having exotics. So,I have a question for you,I have a little lizard about an inch long,it came with some plants I bought from someone in Florida,do I kill it,I can't release it,it's against the law, plus I live in MN.
TomFeb 16th 2009 11:03PM
How can this couple be charged under US law when the Constitution forbids double jeopardy.
The Bahamas must be a very safe place when their police have time to go bust someone for eating iguana. They must not have any murders or robberies of tourists and residents.
personFeb 16th 2009 5:58PM
I hope it gave them the god awful shits.
patriciaagerardFeb 18th 2009 5:38PM
JUST A NOTE: Gopher turtle is endqangered in Florida and illigal to endanger by eatting or running over with car.
JFeb 16th 2009 6:35PM
CHASE AND CATCH THE TWO IDIOTS THEN CHOP THEM UP AND BBQ THEM AND THEN FEED THEM TO THE IGUANAS...JUSTICE AND DINNER IS SERVED!
