Nikon Announces 8 New COOLPIX Digicams for the Spring

Lots of compact camera news today. Nikon announced eight new COOLPIX digicams, ranging from several pocket-friendly compact point-and-shoot cams to larger shooters featuring optical zooms up to 24x. We've got 4 new ones from the S-series, 3 from the L-series, and one P-series.

Highlights? Colors are big this year, and you'll see many of the models available in multiple colors, ranging from Royal Purple to Titanium Silver. The extreme-budget-priced L19 retails for only $109.95, and we liked the curved, hand-friendly case design of the S630. Lots of models, specs, and images, so check out our rundown after the break:

S-Series

S630
We got a quick hands on with this digicam, and the camera body curves slightly from left to right. It fit our hands better than most slim point-and-shoot cameras, and it's great to see a big 7x optical zoom. The 'SureGrip' thumb-hold on the right side of the camera worked surprisingly well, and we had no problem switching from the camera grip to the responsive click-wheel below, used for setting shooting settings and reviewing shots. You'll see the 12 megapixel camera in stores in February for $279.95.

S620
Looking for pastels? The S620's got you covered with a subtle rainbow of cases, ranging from Dusty Pink to Noble Pearl. The 12.2 megapixel camera packs a 4x optical zoom (with image stabilization), and will be out in February for $269.95.

S230
Touch is hot these days, and we're seeing touch-based point-and-shoot cameras from most manufacturers. The S230 is a step up from last year's S550, and this year's model adds a 7x zoom and 3-inch LCD screen. Out in February, this 10 megapixel camera will be available in five colors. Touch for $229.95? Not bad.

S220
The COOLPIX S220 packs a 3x optical zoom, 10 megapixels, and a 2.5 inch LCD into a compact (18mm thick) body. The camera will be available in six different colors, and will retail for $149.95.

P-Series

P90:
The P90 is Nikon's big fixed lens digital camera. It comes with a 24x optical zoom, "vari-angle" LCD (you can tilt the entire screen up or down, helping you to frame your shots when you're shooting with the camera over your head or down near the ground), and shoots 12.1 megapixels. Expect it in stores in March for $399.95

L-Series

L100
The L100 wields a big 15x zoom and 3-inch LCD screen, and it uses standard AA batteries, great for switching out when you're on vacation or are stranded without a way to recharge. MSRP: $279.95.

L20
The L20 shoots up to 10 megapixels and features a 3.6x optical zoom. Cost for the "Deep Red"-colored shooter? $129.95.

L19
Like its L-series brethren, the L19 takes two AA batteries. The entry-level shooter comes with a 3.6x zoom, 2.7-inch LCD screen, and 8 megapixels. You'll see it in March for a budget-friendly $109.95.
