Is Online Porn Responsible for Decrease in Rape Cases?
Many (including Apple) see the prevalence of smut on the Internet as a problem that needs to be stopped, or at least stemmed, for the good of society. Columnist Bob Dyer at Ohio's Beacon Journal, however, has a rather different idea, thinking that perhaps it is responsible for a notable decrease in instances of violent rape across the last 15 years.
Statistics have shown that, in the period between 1992 and 2008, rape cases dropped nation-wide by 30-percent. In 1992, 43 people per 100,000 were forcibly raped, but in 1998 that dropped to 30 people. There are many theories, but these dates correspond nicely to the rise of the Internet among American consumers and, according to Dyer, the easy access to any sort of sexual content has helped to keep would-be offenders in check. Obviously this is a controversial theory that's difficult or impossible to prove, but one study at Clemson University in 2006 showed that states with the greatest prevalence of Internet use enjoyed the greatest decline in rape, meaning there may be something to this after all. But, how does this affect relationships? I'm happy that my husband of 43 years, has NEVER had an interest in Pornography!

And it is unlikely that your husband would have been a rapist...
This decrease would apply only to a small minority of men...

It's an interesting theory to imagine that rapists, exhausted I guess from masturbating to porn are sated and therefore, not committing the crime of rape? I've always thought of rape as being more a crime of violence and the exercise of power and control over another person but I guess you can't deny that if the sexual urge is absent, it is possible the rape might not occur. What about the incidence of rape declining because the average age of american males is increasing? Aren't all sorts of violent crimes down simply because most violent crimes are committed by young males? Haven't there also been studies that link pornography to rape? You hear about people (males) being addicted to looking at pornography and one assumes that if its some sort of malady, that the person afflicted will eventually tire of what was once stimulating and have to graduate to something new. The thought being that actually acting out the sexual acts seen becomes the only way to find excitement. But isn't that what consenting adults do anyway, act out their fantasies?
