First Clues to New iPhone Begin to Surface

In the first tangible piece of evidence suggesting that an updated iteration of the iPhone is on its way, testers have found a reference to the new hardware in the latest iPhone firmware. The discovery of the term "iPhone 2,1" is the key; the first iPhone was identified in iPhone software as "iPhone 1,1", while the iPhone 3G was known as "iPhone 1, 2."
According to this logic, "iPhone 2,1" would be the name for the brand new iPhone Apple is rumored to be working on. MacRumors was the first news outlet to discover the reference; in an interview Thursday, Pinch Media Inc., an ad serving company used by iPhone software developers, said it had collected data suggesting that Apple has been running a small test of about 50 of these new iPhones in the San Francisco Bay Area since October.
Some believe this to be a smaller, lower-cost iPhone, but these rumors are unsubstantiated. (The attached image is a mock-up, for those wondering.) [From: CNN]
