New Mercedes Keeps You Awake at the Wheel

Whether you're driving home late at night, or just bored from being rich enough to afford a sweet car, you won't have to worry as much about falling asleep at the wheel in the new Mercedes Benz E-Class sedan. In its recently-unveiled 2010 line, the car company is including Attention Assist, a sensory system that detects and alerts drowsy drivers.
The system keeps track of 70 factors, including braking, acceleration, time, road conditions, and, most critically, the angle of the steering wheel. If the system believes the driver is falling asleep, an alert icon in the shape of a coffee cup comes up on the dashboard and a noise alarm is activated.
According to Mercedes's Jorg Breuer, the system should also work with intoxicated drivers and those who are distracted for any other reason, such as talking on a cell phone. While the system seems like an excellent idea, we think it would be much cooler if it sent electroshocks through the steering wheel. But we understand there are safety concerns with that, too. Can you just imagine how annoying this is going to be when it malfunctions? Every two seconds the alarm goes off no matter what position you are sitting in.
