Cell Phones Pose Threat to Child Pedestrians, Study Says
Next time you find yourself behind the wheel, watch out. There are slow reacting children out there, and they may just wander right in front of your car. According to a Reuters report, they are preoccupied with their cell phones and not paying attention to your 2000-pound monstrosity, so please, uh, look out for them.
A recent study found that children using cell phones are 43-percent more likely to be hit by a vehicle while crossing the street than are children who are not using cell phones. The study, conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, focused on 77 children, ages 10 to 11. The children were asked to cross a virtual road six times while speaking on a cell phone, and then six more times without doing so. Partially explaining the heightened risk, the children, while talking on their phones, forgot to look both ways 20 percent of the time.
We know that you probably pay attention while you are driving. We're just asking that you not expect the same level of concentration from pedestrians. [From: Reuters.com]

Funny I should read this on here today!! Yesterday my hubby and I were driving along and a young girl just leaving her school walked right out into the street!!!!! She was gabbing on a cell phone and NEVER ONCE looked to see if traffic was coming! I nearly had a heart attack!! I had to pull over and try to calm myself...She scared the crap out of me!!! I HATE CELL PHONES!! I was badly injured and will eventually die due to injuries sustained in a car accident because some female doctor was on her cell and hit me head on in my door! I was bed ridden for FIVE YEARS now have high blood pressure and diabetes from inactivitie...neck and back injuries..my life more or less is over..I can not do anything I used to love...ALL BECAUSE OF CELL PHONES. I HATE THEM AND THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THEM.

Cell phones and computers are the only way children know how to communicate with each other. If they aren't playing a video games, then they are text messaging each other. This is the electronic generation. How sad!

Safety comes first.. parents buy their children cell phones so that if they are ever at peril.. they can have a chance (911 etc)... with that being said... the problem is that these kids are not fully developed mentally to control their emotions when talking and pay attention to cars when crossing the street
Some kid who was probably 16 years old crossed the street (the Grand Concourse in the bronx) the other day right in front of me and he didnt even look to see if there were cars coming... ITS CRAZY!!!!! i saw him.. i braked.. and i beeped so he would hear me so he may think about gettin hit by a car... the kid paid me no mind whatsoever... so basically.. we try to warn ppl about the risks... unfortunately.. not all will make it.. so parents.. please teach teach teach teach teach teach teach!!!!!!! i dont need to get sued bc some kid walked in front of my car bc he was talkin about who has a crush on who... the only crush is the car and the poor child upon impact

Hmm... wierd test. I am 11 1/2 and need a cell badly. I live out in the country so not lots of robberys. But i am gone with no way of contacting my parents about 40% of the time. But why would a kid be crossing a street alone? Ahh the way some raise kids. SOOOOO SAD
