Sorry, you're all parenting fails.
Corporal punishment will only make internal the hate/disrespect that in cases like this is external, and while that's less worse in a moral sense, it's also less healthy for your son's mind (and you wonder why there are so much psychological problems in the U.S.)
You're just doing it wrong all around... I'm a very young teenager, none of my parents ever used corporal punishment, and while I hate to be "proud", judging by most people's actions, I consider myself fairly better educated than most people I've dealt with.
Don't let your kids watch TV or play videogames until they have a fairly good criteria/criterium (I don't know the exact term, english is not my native language), don't let them play with other kids if you see the other kids are not a good influence, always teach them the good and the bad without yelling and explain why... That's what my parents did, and most parents don't do. I work well, other teenagers clearly don't. (Or just do it superficially)
