Tricky Windows Worm Hits 3 Million Computers

Have you updated your Windows machine lately? If not, as always, you certainly should! Word is coming from a number of virus and malicious software experts that a certain piece of nasty software with a number of names has gone on to infect three million Windows machines around the world, with the most infected being in places like China, Brazil, Russia, and India.
The software is known as Conficker, Downadup, or Kido, but by any name, it's a worm, which is software that infiltrates machines and then spreads itself from there. This one is particularly shady and deceptive, renaming itself with every install and also connecting to random online servers, making it very difficult to detect. Once on your machine, it has the power to do whatever it likes, including steal your passwords and private information.

Thankfully Microsoft has released a patch ensuring your machine will be safe, and most virus manufacturers can detect it. So, make with the updating already! [From: BBC News]

In 2007, somebody hacked Carrie Underwood's MySpace page, turning it into a spam-spewing ringtone promotion. For some reason, we find this one hysterical, and somewhat fitting.

In 2007, hackers got hold of Alicia Keys' MySpace page, turning it into a multi-pronged viral attack. Visitors were attacked by spyware through fake video prompts, bogus links and, as if that weren't enough, simply by visiting the site itself.

Just Tuesday, a hacker posted the following on Britney Spears' Twitter page: "Hi Yall! Brit Brit here, just wanted to update you all on the size of my vagina. It's about 4 feet wide with razor sharp teeth." Yeesh.

After Madonna uploaded an MP3 of herself saying, "What the f--- do you think you're doing?" on various file-trading services, somebody hacked their way into the singer's Web site. There, the individual posted unreleased songs from Madonna's forthcoming album 'American Life' with a simple message: "This is what the f--- I think I'm doing."

Hate to say it, but these viruses keep a lot of PC/Windows IT folks employed. Maybe you should show a little more gratitude.

I can't beleive how many people are asking where to get these updates. in case you never noticed the link is already on your computer. You can,and should, set it to automaticly d/l updates. To get to the link on your computer click on the start menu then click all programs and in the top left hand corner it says update windows.Click on that and you will go right to the update page..If you haven't updated in a while you will also have to d/l an authentication file first to make sure you are using a real version of windows. Its that simple, and you should defrag your computer from time to time as well.

As long as you don't use Defender Pro 2009 5 in 1 you are probably safe. The only thing it stops, is your computer from working.

How does Tim Stevens KNOW 3 million machines have been 'infected' ? ? Have 3 million users reported the problem ? If not, how did he come up with 3 million ? If it was from some other report, how do they know?

Keep my PC updated daily, clear the cache and cookies multiple times each day. Change passwords regularly, never had an issue.

I've been a Mac user since 1985. Never had a virus on any of my Macs.
However, the PC's I've used a work have either gotten viruses or the anti-viral software bogged them down to a crawl.

Most of the world has either adware or virus' on their machines yet are still able to 'use' their computer's. For example, if you don't have adware/virus protection and all microsoft's updates you probably had little snippets of rogue software performing little e-errands such as gathering up your browsing information via keyloggers (there are so many of these out there on the web), some little pieces of adware that are on millions of pc's gather up very valuable shopping trends of American's or other country's. so, not all 'unauthorized' pieces of software that unknowningly get downloaded onto our computers necessarily thwart the pc's functionning yet at the same time.. these adware programs are for the most part illegal, unwanted, and most certainly unauthorized.
Stay updated and activated

i updated a vista machine recently, thinking it would be a good idea, WRONGO!!!!!! after updating, my search function could not search for a keyword in a specific document, a utility which i use on a daily basis to find important documents and info etc. too scared to switch to linux because of the limited number of good programs available, I DON'T LIKE FREEWARE, BECAUSE SO FAR, IT HAS GIVEN ME VIRUSES and Macs, while i heard they are excellent performers, do i really really really wanna cough up $2000 for a laptop, especially now with an uncertain economy?
This Is UnbelievableJan 22nd 2009 11:25PM
This is UNREAL!! I downloaded an HP update through my 'Device Manager' for my video driver. My computer scanned for the update over the web, and what do you know.. it started to download an update..... uhm right? Yeah well it did update my video driver but as it did that my Webroot Antivirus/Adware program Popped up a 'Virus' Caught and Quarantined Message??? I just couldn't believe it? So, I emailed HP from their website.. sure enough the first thing they did was apologize. Apparently I wasn't the first person this happened to. You just don't expect a driver update to come with a virus.. lol that's just crazy.
Isn't it?

If you really think YOUR Mac or Linux is safe too I can sell you land on the Moon. You know they attack Windows the most only because it the most widely used system. You're really brain dead if you think you are safer using another OS system

If everyone bought Macs then they would just write virus' for Mac. The reason they write them for PCs is because there are so many more of them, why bother with Macs, that would change if everyone bought Macs.

I've never had a problem with viruses. Use a reputable anti-virus, update regularly, and find a knowledgeable computer tech to assist you on all these if you don't know how to do it yourself. Switching to Mac is useless. They've been around for all these years, and there's still no software written for it.

The only time I ever had a problem with being hacked was when AOL's help desk person didnt verify that the person calling and saying they were me and lost their password was me. I forgot there was one other time with Service Pack 3 for my XP OS on the desk top....the update for that crashed my computer, but we were able to fix it without losing too much info.
So..since 1995 I have had 2 incidents on my PCs. I cant complain...too much anyway. But, like others have said, you cant just clickety clack on anything...and you need to keep your stuff updated (although thats why I had issue #2..). Good antivirus software and adware programs and a firewall are a must.
My mom surfed the net for 3 yrs without any of this stuff. When I found out, I went in and we ended up cleaning out 3 viruses from her computer. (Explained why I wasnt getting some of her emails). I dont run norton or macafee anymore but I found one that seems to be just as good for antivirus protection in AVG.
Macs are nice, but like everyone else has said, if it no longer becomes profitable to hack/infect PCs, they will switch to Macs..or to whatever OS is the system of choice at the time.
