'Sexting' Teenagers Charged With Child Pornography

Six Greensburg, Pennsylvania high-schoolers, found out to be exchanging nude pictures of themselves via text message this past November, have now been charged with child pornography, according to FOX News.
Three unidentified girls between the ages of 14 and 15 allegedly sent nude pictures of themselves to three boys, all between 16 and 17. Apparently, the school found out when one student's cell phone was confiscated for being used during school hours. Said pictures were stored in the phone.
This news, filed under 'sexting,' comes on the heels of a similar story, having taken place on the other side of the country. There is a big difference here, though. While the Seattle teenagers were kicked off the cheerleading team, the Greensburg teenagers are being charged as criminals.

While we all know that child pornography is a problem that should be taken very seriously, we also know the difference between middle-aged men illegally obtaining images of nude pre-pubescent children and teenage girls voluntarily giving nude images of themselves to teenage boys. The former is criminal behavior, and warrants prosecution by the state; the latter is dumb, and warrants a whupping from a parent. [From: FOX News]

..... Sure , let's put the blame on the Principal and teachers for doing what the parents neglect to do , Raise thier Kids ! Give your kid a cell phone for emergency purposes , with camera , text , internet etc .... what are you thinking ??? The parents were shocked to see what these phones were being used for because they never took a look themselves !

I'm sorry, but I think child pornography in any sence of the word is wrong and needs to be delt with . I'd throw the book at the girls. make a big impression on those boys, about whom they should be in contact with...and give that princepal a sturn lecture about looking at the pictures...himself.....jail time might be to much. but you have to show you mean buisness to every one...equaly or some pervs lawyer is going to try to use a "she knew what she was doing" defence to get him out of prison time...on this.. you go half way...or use the two edge sword of justice....you must punish equaly and evenly to all concerned.

Most phones come with a security feature on them. So if you want to prevent anyone from going through your phone just activate. I was also thinking about a situation in Tulsa, OK, where a teacher had her phone stolen by a student. The student went through the contents of the phone and discovered nude pictures of the teacher that she had apparently sent to her husband. As a result, the teacher was fired for having such pictures on her phone at school. You know the whole moral clause in teacher's contract. Next thing you know they'll want to know if she has a pole in her bedroom.

We need to be careful about who is charged with sexual offences because it makes it easier for the real monsters to hide when the system is overloaded with petty offenders, I'm not making light of young people sending nude photos but they should not be grouped with the kind of people that are truley exploiting children.

i totally agree!!! i do not think that the teachers should be able to look through students phones, i think that if there are that concerned that they have been using pictures to cheat then they should ask the parents to look through for them and see if the parents find anything that the students could use.

Why do kids need to be able to take pictures or send pictures on their phones anyway? I bought my son a cell phone so that he could reach me in emergencies or I could reach him in an emergency. Period. I blocked the internet access, pictures, games, ring tones, etc. The phone is for making phone calls. If you are terrified of what your kids an access, your phone carrier can block these accesses!!

This is just another example---among many--of where "zero tolerance" rapidly breaks down into "zero intelligence."

who gave the person who took the phone to search through it looking at pictures or what ever ? That person had no legal right to do so . this case will be thrown out with a good lawyer in pre trail hearings and discoveries. The person who lookedthrough the phone should be charged with a crime for going through this person phone with out there consent. they may be able to confinscate the phone during school hours but nothing else.
now the teenage girls who sent the pictures to there teenage boy's they knew should be dealt with by there parents nothing more the boys shgould be left a lone they did nothing wrong but get pictures sent to them. People can not control what another person sends them in a email through a text message or even through us postal mail. Why are they being charged at all they did not send the pictures that we know of unless they forwarded them on then they most likely can be charged but then it goes back to how the pictures where discovered illegally.

This case is an outrage! It has and is being printed in newspapers nationwide and internationally. A newspaper in the UK reported on the case and ridiculed Seranko and the Police in Greensburg.
These are just foolish young teens, as we all were foolish young teens once in our lives, and don't deserve this world-wide publicity for their so foolish actions nor the charges brought against them by an overzealous prosecutor running for office again this year with a high profile child porn case as an accomplishment for his record.
Unless the high schools now teach Federal Law as a course for all students, there is no way those teens could have known what they were doing could possibly be against Federal laws.
They may well deserve to be punished for their actions but that is what parents are for to mete out the appropriate punishment.
The emotional damage and trauma done to these children by the school calling the police and not calling the parents first and having them come in; Seranko by giving the story to the newspapers; and the overzealous DA, running for office again, charging them with Child Porn and, thus, turning this case into a high profile case that has gone international in coverage, could well affect them for a life-time. And not to mention the emotional trauma to their parents not knowing what is going to happen their chilldren and fully aware of the life-time 'sentence' their children will face if convicted of Child Porn.
The school, Seranko and the DA should be held accountable for their actions or better said over-reactions in this case.

children and young adults and a lot of supposedly intelligent adults just don't understand that these images will be around forever. It's not the paper age when you could shred something and it was gone. Even if deleted these images are still there, like ghosts in the background to come back to haunt you some day when you least expect it. There should be a required class about electronic privacy and security to teach people and actually show them that just hitting the delete button is not enough.

Stupid charge. Are these kids going to be labeled sex offenders for life?
Think about this: if this qualifies as "sex offender" status, eventually the term will not protect anyone because it is used in ignorance. The term/charge must be saved for those who deserve it.
