They can't be that difficult to manufacture, nor are the materials so exotic as to cause the price to be so high.  What we have, I believe, is the outrageous overcharge by the manufacturer(s) to add on equipment that should be included.  Remember when you bought a new computer - and all the cables were available for an extra charge ....the lack of HDMI cables is the same B.S. - just another way for the company to stick you for more money.  It's like buying an automobile and then being told you need to purchase tires in addition.
